Seahawks News: Seahawks trade for Commanders QB Sam Howell, swap picks

The first major headscratcher of the Seattle Seahawks’ offseason just occurred. With Drew Lock off to the New York Giants, Geno Smith is currently the only quarterback on the Seahawks roster. Well, at least he was the only one. Seattle made a trade with the “other” Washington and acquired Commanders quarterback Sam Howell. The move, also involving a swap of picks in next month’s draft, sends Howell across the country to the Emerald City. The Seahawks will receive a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round selection, while they send picks in the third and fifth rounds to Washington. Another QB trade: Commanders are sending last year’s starter Sam Howell to the Seahawks in a pick swap, per sources. Trade:

Little did we know this wouldn’t be the biggest news between these two teams this week. Last year, Howell started all 17 games for Washington, which ended in a 4-13 season and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Howell completed 63% of his passes for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Seahawks got to see him up close and personal when he threw for 312 yards and three scores in a 29-26 overtime win for Seattle in Week 10. Turnovers were a considerable issue for Howell, as he matched his total touchdown passes with the same number of interceptions — 21. This is a curious move for the Seahawks. While it does not necessarily mean they won’t draft a quarterback, it does make the room more crowded, and they spent a third-rounder in acquiring him. Still, John Schneider still deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to quarterbacks. He found Russell Wilson and knew when to move on from him, and his interest in both Geno Smith and Lock did pay off. However, the work is cut out for Schneider. The Seahawks’ first pick of the 2024 draft is No. 16 in the first round, and as it stands they will not pick again until No. 81 in the fourth round. This would surely lead all of us to believe the Seahawks are about to burn a lot of dry powder to make up this draft disparity.
