Seahawks News: Seahawks DB Rayshawn Jenkins led all safeties in this Next Gen Stat in 2023

The Seahawks are making some big changes to the back end of their defense. After cutting Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs and letting Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks leave in free agency, we could be seeing at least four new starters at those spots. One of them is former Jaguars safety Rayshawn Jenkins, who’s joining the team on a two-year deal worth $12 million. That’s a heck of a bargain compared to what they would have been paying Adams, especially because he’s such a radical upgrade in coverage. According to Next Gen Stats, Jenkins led all safeties in fewest receptions over expected allowed last season, beating out superstars like Kyle Hamilton and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Rayshawn Jenkins lands in Seattle eight days after the Seahawks released safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs. In his rookie year with the Chargers he allowed a 109.5 passer rating in coverage. That number has been steadily dropping ever since, going from 101.0 in Year 2 to 78.0, 96.9, 78.6 and finally 62.5 this past season. Jenkins is more than just a traditional safety, too – he has lined up at every position on the back end during his time in Jacksonville. In addition to his fine work on defense, Jenkins has also been a regular contributor on special teams, playing at least 100 snaps in that phase in six out of seven years in the NFL.
