Seahawks 20, Eagles 17: Lock, shock, and roll!

Image Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images The season is still alive! The Seattle Seahawks (7-7) needed a 92-yard touchdown drive from Drew Lock to keep their playoff hopes in shape against the Philadelphia Eagles (10-4). They got it. Lock threw a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba with just :29 left, giving the Seahawks an improbable 20-17 win to snap a four-game losing streak. On a day when Lock had just 116 yards prior to the final drive, Lock accounted for all 92 yards in the two-minute drill. Big throws to DK Metcalf and JSN propelled to Seattle to its first and only lead of the day. The defense still needed to get the job done and stop Jalen Hurts from a game-tying or game-winning drive, and Julian Love swooped in for his second interception of the night. After an opening drive TD, the Seahawks defense held the Eagles to just 10 more points for the rest of the night, an put in their best showing in weeks. Seattle’s playoff hopes just got a huge boost thanks to a backup quarterback and a rookie wide receiver, with major help on defense by former Giants Julian Love and Leonard Williams. It was not much of an entertaining game through three quarters, but Seahawks football has a funny way of creating chaos. What a win! 1st Quarter The Seahawks began the game on defense, interestingly enough replacing Riq Woolen in the starting lineup with Mike Jackson Sr. It only took a few plays for the Eagles to get into Seattle territory, with Jalen Hurts getting a rushing first down and a 3rd down conversion over the middle to Dallas Goedert. Philadelphia was a perfect 4/4 on 3rd down, capped off by a Jalen Hurts scramble and score. A 15-play, 75-yard drive that took off about 8:30. Although Geno Smith was active, Drew Lock got the nod again. A Will Dissly false start put Seattle behind the sticks, and even though they got to 4th and 1, Pete Carroll punted from his own 34. The crowd was not happy. Thankfully, the defense forced a three-and-out, so it wasn’t costly. Seattle got one first down on a 3rd and 10 conversion to Tyler Lockett, after which Noah Fant had an iffy false start penalty on 3rd and 1. Lock was nearly picked on 3rd and 6. 2nd Quarter Philadelphia’s first possession of the 2nd quarter was another looooong drive. A 16-play, 63-yard trip into the red zone, which could’ve ended sooner had the officials not spotted a false start on left tackle Jordan Mailata on 4th and 4 at the Seahawks 18. Hurts hit Julio Jones for a first down on that missed call, but thankfully there was a false start on Jason Kelce to prevent a tush push on 3rd and 1. Quandre Diggs stopped D’Andre Swift in the backfield on 3rd and 6, leading to a Jake Elliott field goal. The Seahawks finally got some offense going, kickstarted by a 20-yard Josh Jobe defensive pass interference penalty on DK Metcalf. Kenneth Walker ripped off a nice run inside the Eagles’ 30, and Lock hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba over the middle on a 3rd and 10 to get the Seahawks in the red zone. Of course, it’s the red zone, so the Seahawks stalled out. They tried to hard count the Eagles on 4th and 4 at the 8, but to no avail. Jason Myers put one through from 26 to put Seattle on the board. After one first down by Devonta Smith, the Eagles threw three straight incomplete passes, giving the Seahawks the ball back with over a minute left and two timeouts to work with. Seahawks are gonna get the ball back! Eagles can't convert on third.. pic.twitter.com/wsu4wpzB3E— NFL UK (@NFLUK) December 19, 2023 A dreadful two-minute drill saw Lock commit intentional grounding, then Evan Brown commit a 3rd down holding penalty. Philadelphia was able to get the ball back thanks to the penalty, but they went three-and-out and punted it away. 3rd Quarter Hey! How about offense?! A 75-yard drive heavily featuring Kenneth Walker, who accounted for 55 yards and the touchdown run. Walker took off on 3rd and 1 for a gain of 23, with excellent blocking downfield by Colby Parkinson and Drew Lock. Tie game! The game wouldn’t stay tied for long. Three more third-down conversions by the Eagles kept the offense on schedule. Jalen Hurts threw a dart to Devonta Smith to set up a goal-to-go situation. After Swift carried the ball to the 1-yard line, it was tush push time. Touchdown, Jalen Hurts. Both teams exchanged three-and-outs after the Eagles retook the lead. A few quality runs by Ken Walker put the Seahawks at midfield to end the quarter. 4th Quarter Faced with 4th and 2, the Seahawks took a critical timeout. Not ideal! Lock’s pass to DK Metcalf was incomplete. but James Bradberry was penalized for DPI and the drive continued. The next 3rd and 2 resulted in an incomplete pass after Lock was pressured by Jalen Carter... oh wait, it was actually a sack. Pete Carroll blew a timeout on the previous 4th down, then called timeout on this 4th down, only for the Eagles to challenge the call and get the incomplete pass overturned to a sack. Great going, Pete! Jason Myers kicked a field goal, but the Seahawks had just 1 timeout left with 10 minutes to go. Jalen Hurts hadn’t taken many deep shots in this one, but he went for Quez Watkins in the end zone but Julian Love was there for the pick! Julian Love intercepts the deep ball!

Philly took 4:43 off the clock but did not get what would’ve been a game-killing third-down conversion. Jalen Hurts ran forever but failed to get a completed pass. Seahawks ball with 92 yards to go and 1:56 left! Dropped pass by Noah Fant nearly led to a pick. DK Metcalf catch on the slant to the 25. Fant for another 5, then a DK catch for a first down on an incredible play! He trapped the ball against his leg and hung on for another 5-6 yards. Back-to-back incomplete passes. Deep ball to DK in double coverage... CAUGHT!!! Inside the Eagles’ 30! More incomplete passes. Third down... TOUCHDOWN JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA!!! WHAT A CATCH!!!!! Still :29 left and the Eagles have a great field goal kicker. Hurts to his own 45 on a scramble after an incomplete pass to AJ Brown. Deep throw to Brown... INTERCEPTED BY LOVE! WILL IT STAND?! YES IT DOES!!! THE SEAHAWKS WIN! THE SEAHAWKS WIN!
