NFL writer lays out a burning question the Saints must answer

NFL.com’s Nick Shook may be one of the few members of the media who believes the New Orleans Saints aren’t dead in the water in 2024. There has been a common opinion the Saints need to blow it up in preparation for 2025. Shook, on the other hand, feels the Saints need to correct a crucial bad habit: inconsistency. The Around the NFL writer took a look at the current landscape of the NFC, including big free agency additions and departures. For the Saints, the only big free agency move was acquiring Chase Young. Shook also identified a burning question the draft can’t answer. Will the Saints find consistency next season? Here’s what Shook had to say: New Orleans was one of the most frequently frustrating operations in the entire NFL in 2023, and it was because the Saints were only reliable when it came to inconsistency. They seemed to find their stride late, though, and there’s reason to believe it still might work out with Derek Carr after all. They just need to produce consistently — and return to form defensively, a goal that could be helped by landing a blue-chip talent with the No. 14 pick. Such an improvement will largely fall on the shoulders of head coach/defensive play-caller Dennis Allen, who staved off a firing and will be on the hot seat entering 2024. How many times did we see the Saints start slow and have to play catchup in the second half last year? Not only was this a constant process, it was also a constant result. The Saints never completed the comeback. This was the Saints greatest form of inconsistencies. They often waited too late into the game to put it together on both sides of the ball. Clearly, this doesn’t mean the Saints can run it back with last year’s group and find extreme success. The Saints still need to add talent. An impact defensive end or defensive tackle would obviously help Dennis Allen’s unit. Offensively, New Orleans needs to fortify the offensive line. Decisions must be made at both tackle positions and left guard. If those choices aren’t correct, the Saints will find it hard to find consistency.
