Kellen Mond, not Chris Olave, is listed in the Saints' No. 2 jersey

This is small potatoes as far as offseason drama goes. But it’s backup quarterback Kellen Mond, not star wideout Chris Olave, listed in the No. 2 jersey for the New Orleans Saints on the team’s official website. Olave wore No. 2 in college at Ohio State and had fueled speculation that he could switch back to it after the number became available; Jameis Winston had already claimed it when Olave was drafted by the Saints in 2022. Things can change and offseason jersey numbers are often in flux, but right now it’s Mond, not Olave, owning it. So what gives? It’s possible Olave changed course and elected to hold onto his No. 12 jersey. Veteran players are asked to buy out unsold stock of their old jerseys if they change numbers between seasons, and there’s a chance Olave declined to sign that check after the total was put in front of him. For context, former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook would have had to pay about $1.5 million to change numbers back in 2021. That’s steep compared to Olave’s $985,000 base salary in 2024. We’ll see if things change in the months ahead. The “CO2” look is a good one for Olave, and it would be sweet to see him wearing such a unique number for a wideout. Stay tuned.
