Raiders News: What Condition the Position is in: Assessing Raiders level of need at EDGE heading into the Draft

With the draft weeks away, it’s time to check in on the Raiders’ EDGE position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical. Starters: Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce Backups: Tyree Wilson, Jenarius Robinson, David Agoha, Charles Snowden, Elerson Smith Maxx Crosby was arguably the best edge rusher in football last year. And quite possibly the best overall defender in football. Along with his 14.5 sacks, he also had 31 QB hits and led all defenders with 23 tackles for loss. He also led all edge rushers with 90 combined tackles. To begin the year, it was seventh overall pick rookie Tyree Wilson. But he was not coming along in his development as quickly as the Raiders had hoped, allowing Malcolm Koonce to take his snaps. Koonce exploded over the final nine games with Antonio Pierce as head coach, putting up eight sacks on those nine games and cementing himself as a fine complement to bookend Crosby. Condition: Strong Notes: With Crosby in his prime, Koonce breaking out, and Wilson still holding the hope of upside as a second-year highly drafted player, the Raiders are set on the edge. I wouldn’t expect they use a pick on edge rusher until at least the later rounds in a BPA type situation.
