Bill Belichick makes Matthew Slater’s case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Image Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images Slater has been selected to 10 Pro Bowls. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is home to just three pure kicking specialists. No other primary special teams players have been inducted. If it was up to New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, that will shortly change with Matthew Slater. “I think Slater is eventually going to be a Hall of Fame candidate,” Belichick said Friday. “As a coverage player, not as a specialist. For what he is, he’s not a returner. So, he’s in a very unique category. One that I don’t think is represented in the Hall of Fame, but based on what he did during his career, the length of time he did it, and the level he’s done it at. “But I would say this guy has been as productive as anybody has ever been at his position throughout his entire career, which is very lengthy. I think he’s the best that’s ever done what he’s done, whether that’s Hall of Fame worthy or not, that’s a different subject that I don’t have a say in. I can’t imagine putting anybody in there ahead of him at that position.” When it comes to Slater, many believe former Buffalo Bill Steve Tasker should be inducted into the Hall before the Patriots legend. Tasker, who was selected to seven Pro Bowls as a special teamer, is regarded by some as the best special teamer of all time. In Belichick’s eyes, however, Slater — who holds 10 Pro Bowl selections — ranks higher. “I think Slater’s done more than Tasker,” Belichick said. “I respect Tasker, but just honestly think he’s done more. I’m sure some people will disagree with that.” After mulling retirement the past few offseasons, Slater returned for his 16th NFL season this year. The 38-year old may be headed towards the end these final two weeks, but continues to make a strong impact on and off the field for the Patriots. “He’s just about the perfect player,” Belichick said. “He does everything you want him to do for your team. He’s the first guy in, last one out, and is a minimal playtime player in terms of the total number of plays he plays, but the way he trains, the way he prepares, communication, he does everything he can to help the team. Has tremendous, total respect from everybody in the organization. Players, coaches, staff, you name it. And he’s earned it. “All the Pro Bowls and recognition that’s so well deserved, and personally, what he brings to the team off the field: Leadership, work ethic, guidance, motivation etc. is very unique and extraordinary. At the very top.” Slater’s leadership was seen first hand last Sunday night in Denver — despite being inactive for the first time since 2017. After rookie kicker Chad Ryland missed a field goal, the captian made sure to let the rookie know the team would need him in the fourth quarter. His words came to fruition, as Ryland later knocked home the game-winning 56-yard field goal with two seconds remaining. “You have guys like Matt Slater coming up to you and telling you, ‘Hey man, we’re gonna need you in the fourth quarter here,’” Ryland said. “That’s what it’s turned out to be. Matt the prophet.”
