Chargers signing quarterback Will Grier off Patriots’ practice squad, per report

The Los Angeles Chargers signed Will Grier off the New England Patriots’ practice squad on Monday, as first reported by NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. Grier, 28, spent three months in the AFC East after agreeing to join the 53-man roster off the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. Clearing waivers in November following a stint as the No. 3 emergency quarterback, the September arrival was subsequently retained on the practice squad. Chosen in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft at No. 100 overall, Grier started two games as a rookie with the Carolina Panthers. The former transfer from Florida to West Virginia completed 28-of-52 passes for 228 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions over that span. He has not taken a snap in the regular season since then. Claimed off waivers in 2021, Grier accrued the past two years between the active roster and practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys. He now moves on to his fourth organization dating back to training camp. The Chargers fired head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco after falling to 5-9. With Justin Herbert on injured reserve following surgery to repair a fractured index finger on his throwing hand, Easton Stick started under center for Los Angeles last Thursday night. Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones are left in the quarterback room in New England. Last week, undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham departed for a spot on the Baltimore Ravens’ 53-man roster.
