A rising member of the New England Patriots’ coaching staff will be returning to the collegiate ranks. Syracuse University is set to hire assistant Ross Rouglas as the program’s next wide receivers coach, according to a report Saturday from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Douglas, 29, has spent the past three seasons in Foxborough, beginning as a defensive quality control coach under the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He was promoted to assistant wide receivers coach in 2022 and joined the Patriots contingent in Nevada as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the West roster during the East-West Shrine Bowl last January. This campaign, Douglas has continued to oversee the wideouts for New England with Troy Brown doubling as the returners coach. Undrafted in 2018, Douglas played defensive back, running back and linebacker through three years at Michigan and two years at Rutgers. As a graduate student for the Scarlet Knights, he started all 12 games and finished with 38 tackles to go with four pass deflections on the way to an invitation to rookie minicamp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After serving a graduate assistant at Rutgers for three years, Douglas had a brief 2021 stint as the cornerbacks coach at Richmond before heading to the NFL. He will now join a staff led by former Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown, who was named the 31st head coach in Syracuse history last month. The 6-6 Orange will face South Florida in the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 21.
