Patriots waive veteran Ty Montgomery, opening roster spot for deferred waiver claim

The New England Patriots have waived veteran running back and wide receiver Ty Montgomery after claiming linebacker Christian Elliss off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles in a deferred move. ESPN’s Mike Reiss was first to report the corresponding cut. Montgomery, 30, conceded a blocked punt in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s 21-18 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. It netted 11 yards off the hands of core defensive back Miles Killebrew as the short field gave way to a touchdown and two-point conversion. The Patriots released Montgomery at the NFL’s roster deadline in August and promoted him from the practice squad prior to the September opener. The Stanford product, who scored a touchdown in his lone appearance of 2022 before going on injured reserve, appeared in 13 games for the organization this season. Through 42 snaps on offense, Montgomery handled three carries for nine yards and five catches for 40 yards. Through 192 snaps on special teams, he added six tackles and served as the primary kickoff returner while averaging 24.3 yards per opportunity. Selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft at No. 94 overall, Montgomery made previous stops with the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and New Orleans Saints. He has appeared in 90 career games, including 20 starts. In additional movement on Friday, the Patriots released kicker Matthew Wright from the practice squad. Wright, 27, signed in November as depth behind rookie specialist Chad Ryland. Entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Central Florida in 2019, Wright has played in 23 games to go 40-for-46 on field goals with a long of 59 yards. An XFL alum, he stands 35-for-37 on extra points through stints with the Steelers, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons. New England’s practice squad moves forward at 15 following the reversions of quarterback Malik Cunningham and running back Kevin Harris.
