Patriots have 19% chance to earn first overall pick in 2024 NFL Draft

Image Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports The New England Patriots are in the middle of their worst season in 30 years, standing at 2-10 after first 12 games. But while the product on the field has been bad, it might result in a net positive: a high selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, and a chance at some potential game-changing talent. Where exactly the Patriots end up picking remains to be seen, but they currently own the second selection. The door for them to climb even higher is open, but according to ESPN Analytics the chances of New England drafting first overall are comparatively slim: at the moment, the Patriots have a 19 percent chance to earn the top pick in 2024. For comparison, the Chicago Bears through a trade with the 1-11 Carolina Panthers have a 76 percent chance at earning pick No. 1. The 4-8 Chicago Bears own the 1-11 Carolina Panthers’ first-round pick (via last year’s pre-draft trade), and that selection has a 76% chance to land at No. 1, according to FPI. The 2-10 New England Patriots now have the second best odds to snag the top pick. The 3-10 Arizona Cardinals also have two first-round picks, with FPI projecting their original selection at No. 3 and the 6-5 Houston Texans’ pick — which was acquired in the move up last April — at No. 23. The Patriots will play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, who were just beaten by the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals, meanwhile, also are in the race for pick No. 1 but their odds are currently calculated at only 3 percent.
