Mathew Sexton’s stint on the New England Patriots’ practice squad has ended one practice after it began. The organization released the wide receiver to make room for the arrival of veteran kicker Matthew Wright, who took over the No. 47 jersey in his debut on Thursday, per the transaction wire. Sexton, 26, had signed on Wednesday after visiting Gillette Stadium for a workout that included 13 free agents. He was most recently a member of the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in September following a preseason that spanned five catches for 60 yards as well as time at kickoff and punt returner. The 5-foot-10, 176-pound wideout went undrafted in 2020 after appearing 43 career games at Eastern Michigan. His MAC tenure brought 1,335 receiving yards, 430 return yards, 10 touchdowns and three blocked kicks. In addition to tours with The Spring League’s Aviators and the XFL’s Vegas Vipers, Sexton has also made NFL stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 and the Kansas City Chiefs in in 2022. The Los Angeles Chargers visit Foxborough on Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
