Patriots promote veteran tackle Conor McDermott to 53-man roster on eve of Giants matchup

The New England Patriots have signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott to the active roster in advance of Sunday’s matchup with the New York Giants. The vested veteran stood at the NFL limit after serving as a three-time standard elevation from the practice squad. McDermott, 31, reached an injury settlement with New England in September and returned to the organization in October. The UCLA product has since started back-to-back games at left tackle. One penalty has followed across 127 offensive snaps. His pass protection has been charted by Pro Football Focus for no sacks and four quarterback hurries. “That’s a possibility,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Friday when asked whether McDermott would soon be added to the 53-man roster. Selected in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft, McDermott arrived in Foxborough at No. 211 overall. The 6-foot-8, 305-pound bookend would be claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills at the close of his rookie preseason. He was reacquired last November off the New York Jets’ practice squad and reached an extension prior to landing on injured reserve in August. McDermott’s AFC East career spans 50 appearances, 13 starts and one touchdown reception as an eligible tight end. The waiving of emergency quarterback Will Grier, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier Saturday, created an opening on the roster. New England’s final injury report of the week included seven questionable, including incumbent left tackle Trent Brown, who missed consecutive games prior to the bye week. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium is set for 1 p.m. ET.
