Re-signing practice squad WR T.J. Luther becomes Patriots’ first reported offseason move

Image Photo by Rich Schultz/Getty Images New England will have to make decisions about the 11 players on its final 2023 practice squad. Amid speculation about his future, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is taking a business-as-usual approach to entering the offseason. Tying up some loose contractual ends is part of this process, and the first move in that regard has been made. The Patriots have signed practice squad wide receiver T.J. Luther to a reserve/futures contract, as first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPCR 2 Houston. An undrafted rookie who split his six-year college career between Wofford and Gardner-Webb, Luther started his career with the New York Jets. He spent all of training camp and preseason with the team, playing a combined 76 offensive and special teams snaps over three exhibition contests without registering any statistics. The Jets decided to let him go as part of their roster cuts in late August and Luther shortly thereafter joined the Patriots’ practice squad. He was let go again in mid-October, but returned to the fold three weeks later. The 6-foot-1, 189-pound wideout went on to spend the final nine weeks of the year on New England’s developmental roster. He ended his rookie regular season without seeing any game action. With Luther staying put, the Patriots now have six wide receivers under contract for 2024. Joining him are DeMario Douglas, DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton and Kayshon Boutte. Kendrick Bourne and Jalen Reagor, meanwhile, are headed toward unrestricted free agency. Luther was one of 11 players on the Patriots’ final practice squad of the season. All of them are on expiring practice squad contracts, and will need to be signed to futures deals in order to remain under control for the upcoming season.
