Matt Sokol, Breon Borders revert to Patriots’ practice squad following Week 16

Matt Sokol and Breon Borders have reverted to the New England Patriots’ practice squad after serving as standard elevations versus the Denver Broncos. Christmas Eve’s 26-23 win at Empower Field marked the first call-up of the regular season for the tight end as well as the cornerback. Sokol, 28, played 10 out of 58 offensive snaps for a depth chart led by Pharaoh Brown and Mike Gesicki in the absence of downgraded captain Hunter Henry. The Michigan State product also stepped in for seven snaps on special teams. Entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Sokol made two stops apiece with the Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions before being claimed off waivers ahead of organized team activities in 2022. He appeared in three games for New England as an elevation last campaign and rejoined the practice squad at its formation in August. Borders, 28, dressed but did not make his Patriots debut Sunday night at Mile High. The veteran corner signed to the practice squad in Foxborough midway through September. Since going undrafted out of Duke in 2017, Borders has appeared in 32 career games, including six starts. His career has spanned seven pass deflections, one interception, one fumble recovery and 42 tackles across stints with the Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons. Following the reversions as well as the recent 53-man promotion of interior offensive lineman James Ferentz, New England’s scout team stands at a dozen players. Buffalo hosts New Year’s Eve’s 1 p.m. ET AFC East kickoff at Highmark Stadium.
