Bill Belichick steals the show on ‘College GameDay’ ahead of Army-Navy Game

Image Bill Belichick is in the middle of his most challenging season as the New England Patriots’ head coach, but that did not stop him from making an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday morning. With the Army-Navy Game being played at Gillette Stadium, he was invited to serve as a guest picker during the pregame show. Belichick surely did not disappoint. Not only did he again showcase his immense knowledge of football history — casually dropping names and facts from Army-Navy Games played more than half a century ago — but he also paid a quite entertaining homage to broadcasting legend Lee Corso while making his (rather unsurprising) pick for the game.

“Coach, I’m going to take a page out of your book here,” said Belichick to Lee Corso before pulling out a Navy helmet from 1962. That year, Roger Staubach led his Midshipmen to a 34-14 win in the game’s 63rd edition. “This is the ‘Jolly Roger.’ ‘Beat Army’ in Chinese for Paul Dietzel’s Chinese Bandits,” Belichick explained before making his pick: “Go Navy, beat Army!” Before picking a winner for the game, Belichick stood question and answer during the pre-game show. While the Patriots’ current 3-10 record and his seemingly uncertain future were not brought up, he touched on a variety of topics ranging from some game memories to the importance the Army-Navy Game has to each of the service schools.

Belichick, of course, grew up around the Naval Academy in Annapolis. His late father, Steve, was a long-time scout and assistant coach for the Midshipmen and his son Bill has close ties to the school to this day. The 124th edition of the Army-Navy Game will be kicked off at 3 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.
