Rhamondre Stevenson diagnosed with high ankle sprain, casting doubt on a return this season

Rhamondre Stevenson is set to miss “a few weeks” after leaving the New England Patriots’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 13 with an injury. According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the third-year running back was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. Stevenson, 25, remained down after a losing a fumble on a run play in the first quarter of Sunday’s game. He had to be helped off the field while being unable to put any weight on his right leg, and quickly departed for the locker room. While he was initially announced as questionable to return to the contest with an ankle injury, the team eventually ruled him out by halftime. Considering the nature of his injury, plus the Patriots’ 2-10 record, Stevenson getting shut down for good instead of returning for the home stretch of the season would also not come as a surprise. With Stevenson out for the foreseeable future, the Patriots will be without their most productive skill position player. Through the first 12 games of the season, Stevenson had registered a combined 194 carries and receptions that he took for a total of 857 yards as well as four touchdowns — ranking first in all three of those categories. And while he did start the season slowly compared to his own standards, he recently had hit his stride: heading into Week 13, Stevenson had registered 100-plus scrimmage yards in three straight games. He also appeared to be well on his way to cross the century mark against the Chargers, after already gaining 40 yards on 10 touches over the first 10 minutes of game time. However, his ankle sprain put a halt to his ambitions — and possibly his season. In light of Stevenson’s absence, the Patriots will turn to veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott as their No. 1 running back. Behind him, Ty Montgomery and JaMycal Hasty as well as practice squad member Kevin Harris offer additional depth. In case Stevenson is sent to injured reserve, forcing him to miss at least the next four of the Patriots’ final five games, his spot on the 53-man roster would be opened up. New England will travel to Pittsburgh in Week 14 to play the Steelers. Kickoff at Acrisure Stadium is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 7.
