Patriots vs. Chargers inactives: Mac Jones active despite losing starting job; Deatrich Wise Jr. out

The New England Patriots made a change at starting quarterback heading into their Week 13 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. But despite Bailey Zappe taking over as New England’s QB1, the team has decided to keep its previous starter on the active game day roster: Mac Jones is offering depth alongside undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham. With that said, let’s take a look at who will not suit up for New England on Sunday afternoon: Patriots inactives

The Patriots entered the weekend having ruled out two of their players: rookie wide receivers Demario Douglas (concussion) and Kayshon Boutte (shoulder, illness) were both not cleared to participate in the game against the Chargers. On Sunday, the team added four more players to its inactives list — including one dealing with an injury. Defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. will be inactive as well. Not only was he questionable heading into the weekend due to a shoulder ailment, the team captain is now also dealing with an illness. With him out, the Patriots decided to activate sophomore Sam Roberts again to offer depth up front. The other three inactives — Alex Austin, JaMycal Hasty, Vederian Lowe — are all healthy scratches. Also Meanwhile, the four other players listed as questionable are all good to go. That means that the Patriots will be able to use running back Ezekiel Elliott (thigh), starting offensive linemen Trent Brown (ankle, chest) and Sidy Sow (ankle), and linebacker Chris Board (back). Offensive lineman Riley Reiff (knee) was also listed as questionable, but he remains on injured reserve and therefore does not count against the inactives. Chargers inactives

From a Chargers perspective, the biggest name is actually not listed on the inactives report. Wide receiver Keenan Allen, who was listed as questionable because of a quad injury, is active against the Patriots. It remains to be seen how involved the veteran pass catcher will be, but he is Los Angeles’ best weapon if healthy. Kickoff between the Patriots and Chargers at Gillette Stadium is set for 1 p.m. ET.
