DJ Wonnum Signs

Edge DJ Wonnum has agreed to terms with the Panthers. 2 years, $12.5 million.
The 6'5, 258 lb edge from Stone Mountain, Georgia and the University of South Carolina has had 23 sacks in his four year career, since being picked in the fourth round of the 2020 draft by Minnesota. He played end for two years, 2020, 2021, in the first year adding three sacks and in 2021 adding 8 after starting fourteen games; in the change to LB in 2022 starting one game, Wonnum had 4 sacks, and in '23 he started 14 games and had 8 sacks again.    Despite not starting fully, Wonnum has not played under half of the snaps available to the Vikings in those four years, playing 51% as a rookie, 79% in 2021, 52% in 2022, and 83% last year. He scored on a fumble recovery against Carolina this year. As an edge, he has good length, good enough bend and bulk, hasn't been a consistent starter so this inevitably provides him that opportunity.  Last year he came alive in Brian Flores' scheme, a blitz man heavy 2 deep similar to Ejiro Evero's.   Before that, he was in Ed Donatell's scheme - Donatell was also with the Broncos before Evero was there.
