A Proper Rebuild

We heard years of Matt Rhule The Program Builder, and we started over with Frank Reich with Scott Fitterer saying they felt they were a QB away.  When was the last time Carolina did a proper cleanse and started completely over?   2020 had some elements of it - but those cuts* were as likely changes in Rhule's 'culture' as they were real cap cleanses. And they spent plenty in 2020, not that any of it was around in 2021 other than Robby Anderson (who promptly got a second contract after a year).  2023 came with almost none of that, and big spending.  2010 was a good opportunity for cleanse, but then they re-signed a bunch of the existing stock, about half of which worked out. I suppose 2002 works as a real sea change (2001 really started it, though), 1999 had its moments. But there's maybe two times in three decades that Carolina has really done a thorough job of ridding themselves of some contracts. 2024 shows a lot of tough decisions ahead, they have cap but they have a lot of dead weight tied into that, too. They have what, from this view, looks like a lot of talent about to become a free agent, and not a lot of other talent - talent that's both 'good enough' and 'signed reasonably to a long enough deal'. Luckily, whoever's next, will have the ability to impact that.   And, nobody wants to spend more time uncompetitive, but at some point some tough decisions have to be made instead of being swept under the rug.
