Packers Reacts Survey: Who should start at cornerback?

Image Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty Images Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine look poised for a long training camp battle for the remaining cornerback role. Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Green Bay Packers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys. Tuesday marked the first time that the media was available to watch the Packers’ Phase 3 organized team activities (OTAs). We learned a decent amount of information about Green Bay’s early lineup rotations with just that one data point, as you can read in our practice news and notes. With that in mind, let’s dive into two questions that are pointed at what was seen on the field on Tuesday. Would you rather the team start Elgton Jenkins at center? With Zach Tom, who the team allegedly believes has Hall-of-Fame potential at center, out with a biceps injury, a somewhat surprising option has popped up for the Packers at the center position: Elgton Jenkins. Jenkins, who was the full-time starting left guard for the team last season, rotated with returning starting center Josh Myers at center in OTAs. Previously, the Packers’ coaching staff has stated that Myers is going to be one of the — if not the only — linemen who isn’t going to cross-train at multiple positions this summer. Meanwhile, Jenkins has played all five positions at the NFL level in the past. If Myers is going to get pushed out of the starting five, one of Jenkins or Tom will likely end up edging him out of place. With Tom likely out until training camp in July, Jenkins seems to be the main candidate to do so, as of now. So would you rather have Jenkins play at guard or center? Jenkins leaving the guard position would mean that the Packers would need to replace both of their guard spots, after Jon Runyan Jr. left in free agency to sign a $10 million per year deal with the New York Giants. For reference, the starting line (when Jenkins wasn’t at center) in OTAs was comprised of Rasheed Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Sean Rhyan and Andre Dillard (left to right). Who should the Packers start at cornerback? Obviously, Jaire Alexander is going to start at one of Green Bay’s outside cornerback spots. Alexander was the highest-paid defensive back in football coming into the offseason, though, he’s been since passed by Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antione Winfield Jr. Keisean Nixon is also expected to retain his position as the team’s starting slot cornerback, after he signed a new contract this offseason — when he came off a year where he played the second-most slot reps of any defender in the NFL. That leaves just the outside cornerback position opposite Alexander up for grabs. The two candidates to win the position this summer are former first-round pick Eric Stokes and 2023 breakout Carrington Valentine. Stokes is a “full-go,” in head coach Matt LaFleur’s words, during OTAs after dealing with several hamstring injuries last season following his rehab from season-ending knee and ankle injuries in 2022. In place of an injured Stokes, a rookie Valentine was able to record 12 starts in 2023 — an insane number for a 22-year-old seventh-round pick. Stokes was only able to play in three games last year, as he started the season on the physically unable-to-perform list and ended it on the injured reserve, but he made two starts in those games. In Tuesday’s practice, Stokes got the nod with the first-team defense over Valentine. Will that last, though? Who do you think should start at cornerback and why? Drop us a line in the comment section if you have a strong opinion about the camp battle.
