NY Jets to meet with two high-profile free agents on Tuesday

ImageNew York Jets aren’t done searching for big-name free agents After rejuvenating their fanbase on Friday night with the signing of Tyron Smith, the New York Jets are still on the prowl for blockbuster talent. Wide receiver Mike Williams and edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney are both expected to meet with the Jets today, per reports. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the date of Clowney’s visit while CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported the date of Williams’ visit. The Jadeveon Clowney visit to the #Jets is Tuesday, with him arriving Monday, source said. https://t.co/nRFZnUNNjJ — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 15, 2024 Calendar Update: I'm told WR Mike Williams is currently scheduled to meet with the #Steelers on Thursday, per source.#Jets are looking forward to meeting with Williams at-length on Tuesday. Tyron Smith should be in as well. pic.twitter.com/szlD3Mfq37 — JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) March 18, 2024 UPDATE (9:25 a.m.): Clowney’s visit has been moved to Wednesday, per Josina Anderson. Williams is also scheduled to meet with the Panthers and Steelers later this week, while the Chargers also remain interested in a reunion. Clowney visited with the Panthers last week. For the Jets, Williams provides an opportunity to round out a near-perfect free agency period on the offensive side of the ball. If the Jets secure Williams, they will have added a game-changing addition at both left tackle and wide receiver while still filling out two other starting offensive line spots and the backup quarterback spot. The 29-year-old Williams, who is averaging 71.6 receiving yards per game over the past three seasons (12th among WR, min. 20 GP), would be an ideal WR2 complement next to Garrett Wilson. As for Clowney, the Jets have a void to fill on the edge after losing Bryce Huff. Clowney, 31, is coming off arguably his best season in the NFL as a member of the Ravens. Clowney tied his career-high with 9.5 sacks while setting a career-high with 71 total pressures, the 11th-most among edge rushers. He also provided his typical hard-nosed run defense. The Jets currently have $20.4 million in cap space, per Over The Cap, ranking 15th in the NFL. Carolina is 21st at $15 million while Pittsburgh is 20th at $15.6 million.
