Roster moves: LB Darrian Beavers signed to active roster, Lawrence Cager to IR

Image John Jones-USA TODAY Sports Beavers could make his long-awaited debut for the Giants The New York Giants made a series of roster moves Saturday afternoon, most notably signing linebacker Darrian Beavers to their active roster off of the practice squad. The Giants originally drafted Beavers out of Cincinnati in the sixth round (182nd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. Beavers was generally considered to be a Day 2 or early Day 3 prospect but slipped down the draft board. He played up to his initial draft evaluation with an impressive spring and summer for the Giants. Beavers flashed in camp and the Giants’ first two preseason games with good play downhill against the run as well as in space — which was unexpected of the 6-foot-4, 255-pound linebacker. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in the Giants’ second preseason game (against the Cincinnati Bengals) and his rookie season was over before it could begin. He was able to avoid the PUP list and return to the field to start camp with the Giants. However, Beavers wasn’t able to win a job on the 53-man roster, was waived after the preseason and signed to the Giants’ practice squad. The last two games will be an opportunity for Beavers to get some in-game experience before the 2024 offseason. The Giants placed tight end Lawrence Cager on the injured reserve in a corresponding roster move. Cager was listed as doubtful for the Giants’ game against the Los Angeles Rams with a groin injury in their final injury report. Kicker Mason Crosby and wide receiver Dennis Houston were also elevated from the practice squad for this week’s game. Crosby was signed to the practice squad following the injuries to Randy Bullock and Cade York, and his elevation is expected. Houston was signed to the Giants’ practice squad back on August 31st after being waived by the Dallas Cowboys. This is an opportunity for the young player to get on the field (even if only on special teams) and perhaps earn a futures contract for 2024.
