In 2023, the Detroit Lions announced to the world that they couldn’t care less about group think when it came to the NFL draft. In 2024, the Dallas Cowboys appeared to take advantage of that fact. Last year the Lions selected a running back and a linebacker in the first 17 picks of the draft; two positions that have proven to of lesser value. They then took a tight end at No. 34 and a safety at No. 45. So when Stephen Jones saw a need for the Cowboys to acquire more draft picks to increase their chances of finding multiple impact players, the Lions were there for the picking.Trading back from No. 24 to No. 29 while adding a pick in the first half of the third round is amazing value. The point value difference is basically adding a late third, early fourth round talent. And while Dallas looked to potentially trade out of the first round all together, they stood pat at 29 and selected Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton. Guyton wasn’t beloved by many in the Dallas draft community, however, and the euphoria of the trade haul was met by consternation from some over the use of the pick and the fact Dallas passed up on Duke center Graham Barton. Check out some of the reactions on Twitter to the team’s moves.
