Backin' Line: Cowboys re-sign Damien Wilson to help LB corps

The Cowboys have agreed to terms with veteran LB Damien Wilson, who ended last year on the active roster but did not play in a game, per a source. More depth at the position. — Todd Archer (@toddarcher) April 29, 2024 After being accused of falling asleep at the wheel during free agency, the Dallas Cowboys have re-signed linebacker Damien Wilson. Terms of his deal have not been disclosed but it now gives the Cowboys Super Bowl-winning experience to a position group that lacked depth last season. That makes two signings for Dallas in a single day after the team brought back running back Ezekiel Elliott after a year apart. The NFL draft allowed the Cowboys to stock up on players they felt could help and it looks like the team is beginning to fill their remaining holes. With big names still on the market, Dallas still has plenty of options available. Wilson was drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft.  He started 22 games and appeared in every game across his first four seasons in Dallas. In 2019, Wilson signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract with Kansas City and started all 29 games he appeared in. He would go on to win Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs. Wilson signed with Jacksonville and started all 17 games recording over 100 combined tackles for the first time in his career. That resurgence led him to ink a two-year, $6.9 million deal with Carolina. The Panthers shifted to a 3-4 defense and Wilson fell out of favor in Carolina midway through his contract. On March 10, 2023, he was released before the start of the 2023 free agency period. With no takers, he had to wait for an opportunity to come calling. Wilson was signed to the Cowboys practice squad back in January to potentially help a depleted linebacker room on a playoff run. Dallas must have liked what they saw during his short stint and his signing adds to a remade linebacker corps that includes Damone Clark, Eric Kendricks, DeMarvion Overshown, and the recently drafted Marist Liufau. For those who are worried about these signings affecting the projected compensatory selections the Cowboys will receive for losing their own free agents don’t fret. The formula date ended on April 28th at 4 pm EST. With offseason work about to start ramping up, Dallas seems intent on rounding out their 90-man roster. Email Sign up Like this article?
