The Dallas Cowboys failed to address the running back position in the NFL draft, and it’s the cause for consternation among much of the fanbase. Owner Jerry Jones let it be known the club is bringing Ezekiel Elliott back into the fold in some capacity this offseason, citing his positive energy and leadership as something that will always have a place with the organization. The team has Rico Dowdle, re-signed to a one-year deal, Royce Freeman, Hunter Luepke and Deuce Vaughn also on the depth chart. The group gives RBBC, running back by committee, vibes, which has been something many have pined for over the years. The team failed to grab a running back after taking Notre Dame linebacker with the No. 87 pick of the third round, and then not seeing the clock again until No. 174. By that time, a slew of RBs were off the board. They were unable to nab any of the well-regarded undrafted free agents either. In their post-draft press conference, the front office implored the media not to close the book on the acquisition process here. And that may have been for good reason. Looking around the league, there are several bloated running back rooms and as teams rarely carry more than three or four at the position onto their 53-man roster, Dallas will certainly have an opportunity to grab one of these guys over the coming months, even if that means waiting into final cuts in August.
