What Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves did one day with no cameras around

You never truly know what NFL players are like when the cameras aren’t rolling. You never really know how any celebrity or powerful person is when they are on camera. That’s because they are like the rest of us. We can all choose (and often do) to act one way, hoping to put on a better image of ourselves. Craig Hoffman of The Team 980 told a story about Commanders safety and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves that was refreshing to hear. Back to that in a moment. Reaves didn’t start on a team that was the second-worst team in the NFL last season, finishing 2023 at a miserable 4-13. Yet, Reaves was clearly a leader on the Washington special teams units in the 2022 season. However, his 2023 season was cut short abruptly when he tore an ACL in only the fifth game. Commanders’ new general manager, Adam Peters, has determined he is ridding himself of a considerable amount of Ron Rivera’s 2023 roster. Undrafted, released several times, not a starter, and rehabbing an ACL. Yet, Reaves is a man Peters, and this coaching staff wants for 2024. Consequently, Reaves was re-signed Wednesday to a two-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Hoffman remembered, “I was in the locker room on locker clean-up day back in January. Reaves pulled John (Keim) and Nicki (Jhabvala) aside. I think it was those two.” Hoffman conveyed how Reaves proceeded to tell them he had seen their work covering the team and thought they did a great job. Hoffman observed Reaves then express he didn’t know if the end of the 2023 losing season had been the end for him in Washington. So he wanted to make sure, before he left that day, to thank the two reporters. Hoffman concluded, “Reavo not only brings a toughness, an attitude, a togetherness to the locker room and field. He is a pros pro and he shows it in a litany of ways. He was taking the time to thank people there with no pads, recorders and cameras and see them as people, versus the nuisance frankly a lot of the players see us as when we are also just trying to do our jobs.” Perhaps, then, is it humility and thoughtfulness that contribute to making Reaves the type of person that Peters wanted back again with the Commanders next season?
