Colts News: How does re-signing Kenny Moore II impact Colts draft plans?

The Indianapolis Colts continued their trend of taking care of their homegrown talent when it was announced that they came to an agreement with Kenny Moore II on a three-year, $30 million dollar deal. This contract made Moore II the highest-paid nickel back in NFL history. This was another priority in-house free agent for Chris Ballard. Without Moore II, the Colts defense would not only be missing a proven player in the secondary but his leadership in the locker room as well. So what does this mean for Indy’s draft plans? This re-signing gives the Colts security at the nickel spot so it does allow Ballard to shift more focus on boundary cornerbacks in the first few rounds of the draft. That of course if he doesn’t sign or trade for a veteran corner in the coming days, which would make that addition more of a priority. As of now, Chris Lammons is slated to be the backup for Moore II. He did a fine job this season when he filled in for him against the Las Vegas Raiders this past season, but I believe there still should be some competition for that role in training camp. Moore II has missed five games over the past two seasons so having a quality backup if he has to miss any time is ideal. Plus, you can factor in that Moore II will be turning 31 in the final year of his new contract. This draft class is deep at the nickel back spot so there are some solid options like Daequan Hardy, Jarrian Jones, and Myles Harden that could be available on Day 3. That would be the earliest I can see Ballard selecting a nickel corner. Put me in the camp of leaving the draft with one to have a player to develop for the next three seasons to take over for Moore II when his tenure comes to an end.
