Colts News: How signing Joe Flacco impacts Colts draft plans

The Indianapolis Colts had a hole on the depth chart when it was announced that Gardner Minshew was signing with the Las Vegas Raiders early this week. Just hours after the official new league year kicked off, they found their new backup quarterback to Anthony Richardson in Joe Flacco. The two sides agreed on a one-year deal that is worth up to $8.7 million and included $4.5 million guaranteed. This signing gives the Colts security if AR has to miss any time this season and provides another veteran voice for the young quarterback to learn from in Year 2. So what does this mean for Indy’s draft plans? It remains the same as it has been this offseason. There may have been a sliver of a chance the Colts would draft a quarterback on Day 3. But the expectation from the vast majority was that Chris Ballard would either re-sign Minshew or acquire a veteran quarterback to fill that role. This could make one think there is no need to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft, but I think otherwise. This is just a one-year deal for Flacco. Sam Ehlinger is entering the final year of his rookie contract and there needs to be a competition for the No. 3 quarterback spot on the roster. If the front office believes there is a player with the tools to develop into a quality backup quarterback, then a Day 3 selection should be in consideration. It’s a low-risk move that could payoff into a younger backup for Richardson over the next few years so Ballard doesn’t have to find a veteran option every single offseason going forward.
