Colts News: How signing Raekwon Davis impacts Colts draft plans

The Indianapolis Colts made their first move with an outside free agent on Tuesday afternoon. They agreed on a two-year, $14 million deal with Raekwon Davis. The former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle gives the Colts’ defense an upgrade to their depth at the one-tech behind Grover Stewart. So how does this affect Indy’s draft plans? Prior to the addition of Davis, I mentioned that even with the re-signing of Stewart, selecting a depth option as early as the third round should be considered. This move by Ballard lessens the need to select a one-tech prospect that early. Davis is a quality player to have behind Stewart for the next two seasons and does bring starting experience with him. He should be able to help keep Big Grove fresh. The plus side is that he turns 27 before the upcoming season so there is a chance that he can develop as the long-term option if he can prove himself over the next two seasons. With that being said, the run defense was so bad when Stewart wasn’t in the lineup this past season so Ballard can’t bet on Davis being the sole solution if Stewart has to miss any time in 2024. I still like the idea of selecting a one-tech prospect in the upcoming draft but it now can come in the late rounds after the addition of Davis. There are options like Jordan Jefferson and Evan Anderson that should be on Ballard’s radar. Adding beef to the interior of the defensive line should still be considered come late April.
