Chargers sign QB Will Grier off Patriots practice squad

Image Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images The Chargers went out and found a reserve quarterback who has familiarity with their offensive system. In the first transaction made by interim general manager JoJo Wooden, the Chargers are signing quarterback Will Grier off of the Patriots practice squad. Grier will be placed on the active roster in a move which will likely place him as the team’s backup for the remainder of the 2023 season. Grier spent two seasons (2021-2022) with the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. During that time, he got acquainted with then-offensive coordinator Kellen Moore which is likely the main reason the Chargers went and made this signing. Instead of relying on a seventh-round rookie in Max Duggan, the Chargers found a reserve player with decent familiarity in their offensive system. The first significant move by interim GM JoJo Wooden.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) December 18, 2023 Grier spent one season of college football with the Florida Gators where he threw for 10 touchdowns to three interceptions in six games. After sitting out the 2016 season due to transfer rules, Grier then started his final two season of eligibility at West Virginia. In that span, he threw for over 7,000 yards and 70 touchdowns before winding up a third-round draft pick of the Panthers in 2019. As a rookie, Grier saw two starts for the Panthers but they culminated in just 228 passing yards and four interceptions. 1,372 Total yards of offense.
