Chargers OC Kellen Moore on two-minute offense issues: 'Protection is a huge aspect of it'

Kellen Moore spoke to the media regarding the teams’ struggles in two-minute situations this season. Specifically, Moore mentioned the Chargers’ issues in pass protection. Protection is a huge aspect of it. It’s pretty dominant that you’re going to throw the football. You’re not going to run it. Games are going to show up, twists and all of those different things. You have to be ready to handle those. From a schematic standpoint, I’m always looking at it, ‘How can I help those guys?’ Whether it be a protection adjustment, the distance of a route based on the game clock. Sometimes, you have to take calculated risks in those situations because you need to get some yards. We have to continue to find ways to improve there because, obviously, it’s gotten us a couple of times. The Chargers’ offensive line has been on their heels in many of the two-minute drill scenarios. Zion Johnson and the rest of the members have not played their best football in the clutch. The loss of Corey Linsley and a rather injured Rashawn Slater don’t help their case. The other critical issue is their lack of non-offensive linemen blocking options. Consistently, players like Stone Smartt, Tre’ McKitty, and Nick Vannett have graded as bottom-tier blockers in each individual contest, Perhaps Stephen Anderson or Hunter Kampmoyer can change the Chargers’ blocking struggles this Sunday against Baltimore, but they definitely need a spark in the tight end room from someone. Austin Ekeler has also notably taken a step back as a pass blocker by most metrics relative to his previous seasons, Also, one can’t help but think of perhaps how much easier the Chargers’ two-minute offense would be with even one of Mike Williams or Josh Palmer out there right now. Williams has obviously made a lot of clutch plays down the stretch that have swung the outcomes of games. Whatever the issues can be attributed to, the Bolts will have to correct their failures on two-minute drives before a highly anticipated matchup with Lamar Jackson’s Ravens.
