D.J. Humphries released with post-June 1 designation

Post by BigBlue »

The Arizona Cardinal announced the release of left tackle D.J. Humphries on Wednesday following the beginning of the new year. Humphries had two years remaining on his contract and tore his ACL in the team’s second-to-last game of the season. He was released with a failed physical designation. A simple release would have saved the Cardinals about $9 million against the cap in 2023, carrying about $13.8 million in dead money charges against the salary cap for bonus money already paid previously and not yet accounted for against the cap. However, per the NFL transaction report, the Cardinals elected to designate Humphries as a post-June 1 release. That means the Cardinals will save almost $16 million in cap space but not until June 1. They will carry $6.9 million in dead money charges in 2024 and in 2025, splitting the dead money over two years. Humphries could now re-sign with another team, although that is unlikely because of his injury. He will not likely be able to play until at least December. But the Cardinals will carry the $22.9 million cap charge his contract was scheduled to have through the beginning of June. The $16 million in cap savings will kick in on June 2.
