Cardinals trading WR Rondale Moore to Falcons for QB Desmond Ridder

Post by BigBlue »

The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback room will apparently have a new addition. According to multiple reports, they acquiring quarterback Desmond Ridder from the Falcons for wide receiver Rondale Moore. There is no word yet that draft picks might also be involved in the trade. The departure of Moore clears the way for wide receiver Greg Dortch to cement his role as the team’s slot receiver. Ridder, whose versatile skills mirror those of Kyler Murray, became expendable after the Falcons signed quarterback Kirk Cousins. Ridder, a third-round pick in 2022, has two years remaining on his rookie contract and will count $1,192,542 million on the cap this year and $1,436,313 million in 2025. His salaries are $985,000 in 2024 and $1.1 million in 2025. The cap hits are higher because of roster bonuses of $207,542 in 2024 and $336,313 in 2025 that are due each year on the fifth day of training camp. Moore is entering the final year of his rookie contract after being selected in the second round of the 2021 draft. His salary of $1.6 million transfers to the Falcons and the Cardinals will carry $598,955 of dead money for the final year of proration from his signing bonus. The Cardinals also have quarterback Clayton Tune, a fifth-round pick in 2023, on the roster. When asked about adding a veteran quarterback to the roster during the combine, general manager Monti Ossenfort said, “Clayton made a lot of great strides last year. It’s hard as a rookie to play, especially in Clayton’s position when he wasn’t getting all the reps during the season. That’s the nature of being a backup quarterback. I think Clayton made strides last year. As do all our rookies, I think he’s got to make strides this year. I think there’s value in having veterans at any position. I think it provides a sounding board for younger players. “But ultimately, it’s going to be about who can do the job at their highest capability, so whether that’s a young player or an old player, we’re going to make the best decision. But we’re excited with Clayton. Clayton’s been in the facility a lot here these last couple weeks working and trying to get better, so we’re excited to work with him moving forward.” It’s a long time between now and the 53-man roster reduction in late August, but the intriguing question will be whether the Cardinals will opt to keep three quarterbacks on the roster.
