Bucs vs. Eagles: Super Wild Card Round Most Impressive

The Bucs made it to the Super Wild Card round and faced the Eagles in primetime on Monday Night Football. After falling to them 25-11 in Week 3, Tampa Bay showed how much they have grown throughout the season in what ended up being a convincing 32-9 win. They were able to control the clock and limit the Eagles from doing much of anything offensively. It was a reverse in the outcome from their matchup earlier this season, and that is a credit to who impressed the most. HC Todd Bowles And His Defensive Playcalling Todd Bowles called a great game on the defensive side of the ball. In the first half, Bowles’ playcalling forced Jalen Hurts into a lot of quick passes as he dialed up a lot of blitzes and utilized his players in different ways. From putting YaYa Diaby at inside linebacker, splitting snaps between Devin White and K.J. Britt, and formations that consistently allowed for pressure to get to Hurts in a hurry. With Bowles’ playcalling combined with an early start for the Bucs’ offense, the Eagles were not able to get the run game going with D’Andre Swift. Besides a few big plays to Devonta Smith, they failed to move the ball and put together long drives. That allowed Tampa Bay to control the clock and time of possession this time around. Coming into tonight, it was presumed that Bowles needed to win to end any doubt about his head coaching future. He did just that, and in a bigger and better way than most imagined heading in. QB Baker Mayfield ImageBucs QB Baker Mayfield – Photo by: USA Today Baker Mayfield had an impressive game at quarterback. Mayfield made solid decisions with the football, and he battled through injury to have one of his best games of the season. He finished with 22 completions on 36 attempts for 337 passing yards and three touchdowns. All of this, and it could have been even more if not for a handful of drops by his weapons on offense. Overall, Mayfield commanded the offense and showcased why he should be the guy under center going forward. He is having fun playing football in Tampa Bay, and his play tonight got the Bucs a playoff win. That should go a long way in securing a payday this offseason. WR David Moore What a way to celebrate a birthday. After coming in to replace Trey Palmer after some early struggles, David Moore first got involved on offense by catching a 22-yard pass up the middle and getting a 15-yard facemask call added on. Then, he had his big playoff moment. On a big third-and-7 in the first quarter, Moore went over the middle of the field on a crossing route, and with two Eagles defenders colliding, he caught the pass and headed upfield. He then put on some moves and found the end zone. It was a 44-yard touchdown and a key play in giving the Bucs some early momentum. Perhaps that means “more” playing time ahead. K Chase McLaughlin ImageBucs K Chase McLaughlin – Photo by: USA Today Chase “Money” McLaughlin. Chase McLaunching. Chase Bank. Whatever you want to call Chase McLaughlin, he’s automatic. His stellar season continued on Monday night, as he converted all three of his field goal attempts and put a total of 12 points on the board. That included a 54-yarder in the second quarter to give the team a 13-0 lead. McLaughlin offers an element that has been missing in recent seasons — the long field goal. His range, paired with impeccable accuracy and an added clutch factor, has quickly made him one of the best kickers in the NFL. One that the Bucs should do everything to re-sign in the offseason. Bucs’ Linebackers Todd Bowles schemed up ways to get his linebackers involved. Each of them contributed and had impressive nights. ILB Lavonte David Lavonte David’s still got it. David is as good as ever in his 12th NFL season and made a couple of big plays. His huge tackle for loss in the third quarter helped set up a safety, and he was sharp up the middle on defense. OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has had his ups and downs as an NFL player. But on Monday night, Tryon-Shoyinka had one of his better games this season. He benefited largely from the blitz packages and recorded a sack, two quarterback hits, and did well in containing Jalen Hurts. ILB K.J. Britt K.J. Britt played a large part of the game over Devin White, and he more than held his own. The energetic mike linebacker helped stuff the run, and he even got in on stopping the potent “tush push” when the Eagles attempted it on a two-point conversion attempt. Britt has been solid whenever he has been on the field, and that trend continued in this one. OLB Anthony Nelson Anthony Nelson chased after Jalen Hurts after Lavonte David’s big tackle for loss and forced Hurts into intentional grounding. because it happened in the end zone, a safety was called, which at that point gave the Bucs an 18-9 lead. It was a key moment that gave Tampa Bay a two-possession lead. TE Cade Otton ImageBucs TE Cade Otton – Photo by: USA Today Cade Otton had some drops, but he also picked the right time to have a career game. He set career-highs in receptions and yards, finishing with eight catches for 89 yards. Otton was Mayfield’s main target through the air, and although he dropped a couple of passes, he also was critical in helping move the chains throughout the game. Otton has his faults and he may not be the No. 1 tight end of the future, but the good he provided definitely outweighed the bad tonight. DT Calijah Kancey While YaYa Diaby has deservedly gotten a lot of praise for his play in his rookie year, don’t forget about the other half of the promising defensive rookie duo. Calijah Kancey had a solid game up front, recording a half of a sack, a tackle for loss, and a pass deflection.
