Inside Baker Mayfield’s Historic Game In Bucs’ Win

The Bucs just won in convincing fashion in hostile territory against a team that also had playoff aspirations. The 34-20 victory at Green Bay was driven by Tampa Bay’s offense which scored on six out of their first eight drives before kneeling out their ninth to ice the game. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was the key to the Bucs’ air attack on Sunday, completing 22-of-28 passes (75%) for 381 yards and four scores. The 34 points scored were the second most for the Bucs on the season. All of this was driven by a passing attack that could barely be contained. Tampa Bay generated 353 yards, 18 first downs and four touchdowns through the air. That level of efficiency from Mayfield was historic in nature. Perfect day in Green Bay for Baker Mayfield. 381 yards

He mixed several impressive tight window throws over the middle of the field to receiver Chris Godwin and tight end Cade Otton with correctly identifying wide open options all over the field as he executed offensive coordinator Dave Canales’ offense to a plomb. The performance was one for the history books in historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Open since 1957, Lambeau Field has hosted opposing football teams for 66 years. And never before has visiting quarterback posted a perfect passer rating of 158.3 against the Green Bay Packers. That is until Sunday. The other two were Nick Foles in 2013 and Ken O’Brien in 1986. Bucs Quarterback Efficient To All Levels Of The Field Baker Mayfield completed passes to seven different receivers including his two main targets, Chris Godwin and Mike Evans who accounted for 18 of his 27 targets and 212 of his 381 yards. But he also found four different players for touchdowns as Evans, Rachaad White, David Moore and Ko Kieft all found paydirt on tosses from Baker. Next Gen Stats also reported that Mayfield threw a touchdown on passes targeting each of the four levels of the field (behind the line of scrimmage, 0-10 yards, 10-20 yards and 20+ yards). Baker Mayfield completed 20 of 24 passes against zone coverage for 361 yards & 3 TD in the Buccaneers 34-20 victory over the Packers. Mayfield threw a TD pass to all four levels of the field for the third time in his career, the most by any QB since 2016.#TBvsGB | #GoBucs pic.twitter.com/OpmeWv4ThM — Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) December 17, 2023 And Fox Sports’ Greg Auman found that Mayfield’s 13.61 yards per attempt was the 2nd-highest by any quarterback in a single game all season. Only the 49ers’ Brock Purdy has a higher mark (13.63 in week 14). Bucs Offense Heading In Right Direction ImageBucs WR Chris Godwin – Photo by: USA Today After averaging 17.3 points per game while going 3-4 over their first seven games, the Bucs are now 4-3 while averaging 25 points per game over their past seven. Baker Mayfield’s splits over those two different time periods are similarly encouraging. Over the first seven games of the season Mayfield averaged 228.6 yards passing per game while posting a 10-4 touchdown to interception ratio. Over the past seven games he has averaged 245.1 yards per game with a 14-4 touchdown to interception ratio. Now 7-7 on the season and in the driver’s seat of the NFC South, Mayfield and the Bucs’ offense are improving as they enter the home stretch of the season.
