Bucs at Falcons: Most Impressive In Week 14

It was do-or-die at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta this afternoon between the Bucs and Falcons. In a game that largely shapes the the rest of the season, the Bucs came back and won in the final minute 29-25. It was a resilient win for Tampa Bay, and here is what stood out most. FS Antoine Winfield Jr. I pondered before the game – what can Antoine Winfield Jr. do next to have an impact in a game? Well, Winfield added to his ever-growing list of accomplishments by sacking Desmond Ridder and forcing him to fumble the ball in the end zone. Pat O’Connor wrapped up fullback Keith Smith to secure the safety and give the Bucs a 12-10 lead. Who else but @AntoineWJr11 👏 📺: #TBvsATL on CBS

It’s a no-brainer for Jason Licht and the front office to lock him up, as he has shown on a weekly basis why he is one of – if not the best – safeties in the NFL. RB Rachaad White and The Bucs’ Run Game ImageBucs RB Rachaad White – Photo by: USA Today It took a little bit for Rachaad White and the Bucs’ run game to pick up yards, but in the second half, things started to click. White started off his impressive day in a big way on another drive that looked like it was going to stall out. White caught a screen pass from Baker Mayfield behind the line of scrimmage on third-and-9 and ran 31 yards in for a touchdown. The running game then got into a nice rhythm in the fourth quarter with White and Chase Edmonds finding plenty of holes against the Falcons’ front seven. On the day, Tampa Bay had 148 rushing yards on 37 carries, equating to exactly four yards per attempt. White finished with 102 yards on the ground – his second 100-yard game in the last three games. For White, his latest exploit as a receiver combined with eclipsing the century mark as a runner showcased his full Alvin Kamara-like abilities. It is clear that Rachaad White has value in an NFL offense, and the team surely hopes he can continue to showcase why in both areas of the team’s offensive attack. Bucs Special Teams Specialists Early on Chase McLaughlin and Jake Camarda helped out the Bucs’ cause in a big way. McLaughlin’s 55-yard field goal got the team on the board after their opening drive stalled, while Camarda’s initial 59-yard punt pinned the Falcons and gave Tampa Bay a short field after Davis’ interception. On the day, Camarda averaged 54.2 yards on his six punts and McLaughlin connected on both his field goal attempts. While Koo struggled for the Falcons, the Bucs’ specialist duo showed why they are one of the best in the NFL. ImageBucs CB Zyon McCollum and Falcons WR Drake London – Photo by: USA Today CB Zyon McCollum What stood out throughout the afternoon was Zyon McCollum’s improved tackling ability and holding his own in coverage, especially deep down the field against former Bucs wide receiver Scotty Miller on multiple occasions. He has come a long way in wrapping up wide receivers in the open field and breaking up passes, and that is more than deserving of a mention as he has been more prominent in the defensive backfield with Carlton Davis III and Jamel Dean both missing time this season. McCollum led the defense with nine tackles, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. CB Carlton Davis III It was unexpected. It was unlikely. But Carlton Davis III changed the momentum early in the game by snatching the ball from Bijan Robinson and recording an interception in the backfield. That put the Bucs’ offense in first-and-goal and they capitalized with a touchdown to begin the second quarter. But after getting burned by various Texans’ receivers this season, Davis has improved in recent weeks against the Colts and on Sunday in Atlanta. His interception early on was the kind of play expected by the team’s best cornerback. Bucs Interior Defensive Line The Bucs got some needed production upfront. Greg Gaines showed off his “gains” by bringing down Desmond Ridder for a sack in the first quarter. Besides just that play, Gaines had some big shoes to fill as Vita Vea was out with a toe injury. The team needed some guys to step up and be better, and he helped hold the line, along with an emerging defensive star. What else can be said about Calijah Kancey? Before the game, co-defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers had this to say about him. “This guy has oodles and oodles of ability and he’s like a sponge being such a young player,” Rodgers said. “Some of the stuff that he has been able to do coming in right now and making the plays and the impact he has on the games is impressive.” Calijah Kancey recorded what ended up being a crucial third-down sack in the first half making a shoestring takedown of Ridder. Younghoe Koo would come on after and miss a 50-yard field goal attempt knocking off the right upright, and the rookie defensive tackle’s sack made a difference. Rodgers said it best – Kancey has had an impressive impact on games, and he is only getting started. TE Cade Otton’s Clutch Gene Cade Otton had a quiet day, only hauling in two passes for 16 yards, but one of them helped the Bucs emerge victorious. With the offense moving downfield, it was Otton’s touchdown grab with 31 seconds left that was the game-winner. After proving last year that he can be counted on in the closing seconds to help save the season, he again showed off his ability to come through in the clutch.
