Bucs Record Watch 2023: Week 14 vs. Falcons

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Bucs. They started the year 3-1 and hit their Week 5 bye atop the NFC South, but then came crashing down to 3-5 after four straight losses. A win over Tennessee in mid-November briefly had things back on the upswing, but two straight losses put them at 4-7 — a season-high three games under .500. Most recently, a sloppy win over the 1-11 Panthers has them within striking range in the division despite being 5-7. That brings us to Sunday’s Week 14 matchup in Atlanta. Tampa Bay trails the Falcons by one game, making this one essentially a win-or-go-home. With a win, the Bucs take first place in the NFC South via tiebreaker with four games to go. They’d still have a long road ahead to actually finish off a three-peat as division champions, of course. Meanwhile, a loss on Sunday all but eliminates them, as they’d be two games behind the Falcons, who would be 4-0 in divisional games. Obviously, the win, their place in the division race and their playoff hopes will take center stage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. At the same time, though, there will be some individual milestones and records on the line as Tampa Bay takes on Atlanta. Last week, Mike Evans was the star. He extended his 1,000-yard season streak to 10, plus he passed Shelton Quarles for 10th-most games played in franchise history. Chris Godwin passed Jimmie Giles for fourth-most total touchdowns in team history, and Will Gholston passed John Lynch for sixth-most games played in Bucs history. Now, let’s take a look at where things stand heading into Week 14: Mike Evans With one more receiving touchdown, Evans will tie former teammate Rob Gronkowski for 12th-most in NFL history (92). Two more would move him ahead of Gronkowski. Evans has 10 touchdowns on the season now, meaning he’s within range of his own single-season franchise records. One more receiving touchdown ties him with Mike Williams (11 in 2010) for fifth-most in a single season in team history. Two more will tie himself (12 in 2014 and 2016) for third-most, while three more will also tie himself (13 in 2020) for second-most. Finally, four more receiving touchdowns this season would have Evans tie his own single-season team record (14 in 2021). With one touchdown of any kind, Evans can pass Rob Gronkowski and Jim Taylor (93) for 30th-most total touchdowns in NFL history. Two touchdowns will tie him with Jerome Bettis, Priest Holmes and Marshawn Lynch (94) for 27th-most total touchdowns in league history. ImageBucs WR Mike Evans – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR Evans is only six catches away from having 750 in his career, making him the seventh active player to reach that mark. Evans is only two receiving yards away from passing Muhsin Muhammad (11,438) for 34th-most in NFL history. He is also 183 away from passing Calvin Johnson (11,619). If he passes Johnson this season, he’d also be passing him for sixth-most receiving yards by a player through 10 seasons of a career. His 75-yard touchdown last week added six more points to the board for Evans in his career, which means he only needs 33 more to break Martin Gramatica’s Bucs career record (592). Finally, Evans will be playing his 150th game as a Buc on Sunday, leaving him eight away from passing Mike Alstott (158) for ninth-most in franchise history. Chris Godwin Godwin is one receiving touchdown away from tying Jimmie Giles (34) for second-most in Bucs history while passing Cameron Brate (33) for third-most in the process. Godwin was held without a catch last week, which means he still needs one more to join Mike Evans as the only players in Bucs history to reach 500 receptions with the team. There will be another significant milestone for Godwin on Sunday, as he’s set to play his 100th career game with the Bucs. That ties him with Mike Washington, Pete Pierson, Davin Joseph, Ron Hall, Gerald Carter and Cedric Brown for 41st-most in franchise history. Rachaad White ImageBucs RB Rachaad White – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR White is three total touchdowns away from tying five others for 10th-most single-season touchdowns by a running back in franchise history. The second-year running back also has a chance to have something to show for a strong start to his career, as he needs just 74 more receiving yards to join Warrick Dunn as the only players in Bucs history with 1,000 rushing yards and 750 receiving yards over their first two seasons. He also needs 200 more scrimmage yards to become the eighth player in Bucs history with 2,000 over the first two seasons of a career. Will Gholston Sunday will be Gholston’s 166th game with the Bucs. He is firmly in sixth place all-time among Tampa Bay players, and his target for fifth will be a moving one as Lavonte David is still active. Shaq Barrett Barrett is 10.5 sacks away from passing Gerald McCoy (54.5) for fourth-most in franchise history. He also needs one more forced fumble to tie Ronde Barber and Warren Sapp (15) for fourth-most in team history. YaYa Diaby Diaby is 1.5 sacks away from passing Gaines Adams (6.0 in 2007) for third-most by a rookie in franchise history. Meanwhile, 3.0 more sacks will move him ahead of Adrian Clayborn (7.5 in 2011) for second-most by a Bucs rookie. Lavonte David ImageBucs ILB Lavonte David – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR David needs 10 more tackles to make 2023 his 10th season with 100-plus tackles. If he reaches that mark, he’ll join London Fletcher (14 seasons) and Bobby Wagner (11) as the only active players since 2000 with double-digit seasons of 100-plus tackles. David also only needs one tackle for loss to tie himself (2014), Gerald McCoy (2014) and Jason Pierre-Paul (2018) for the Bucs’ longest streak of games with a tackle for loss since tackles for loss became an official stat in 2006. Sunday will be David’s 177th game with Tampa Bay, leaving him six behind Paul Gruber (183) for fourth-most in franchise history. It will also be his 177th start, which has him six behind Gruber (183) for third-most games started in team history. The legendary Bucs linebacker needs 1.5 more sacks to pass Brad Culpepper (33.0) for eighth-most in Bucs history, while three more passes defensed will move him ahead of Donnie Abraham (64) for fifth-most in Tampa Bay history. Carlton Davis III Davis needs 15 passes defensed to pass Derrick Brooks (84) for third-most in team history. Antoine Winfield Jr. Winfield needs two more forced fumbles to tie Jermaine Phillips and Stylez G. White (10) for ninth-most in team history.
