Week 13 Snap Count Analysis: Bucs vs. Panthers

Each week after every Bucs game, we’ll take a closer look at the snap count distribution for Tampa Bay on offense and defense. We’ll assess what we can learn from who played the most and least from the game. The Bucs were able to hold off the Panthers on Sunday to win, 21-18. That puts Tampa Bay at 5-7 on the season and one game out of first place in the NFC South. Bucs Offense Image The big story pertaining to the Bucs’ offense was of course the historic game from Mike Evans. We’ll get to Evans and Chris Godwin in a second, but WR3 Trey Palmer saw a drop in his snap count to 61%. That was the lowest amount for Palmer since Week 2 when he played 49% and wasn’t used as much as he does at this point of the season. Deven Thompkins cut into that time seeing a huge jump for 7% last week to 21% on Sunday. David Moore and Ryan Miller got a couple of snaps as well. While he did have a rushing touchdown, it was his only touch of the game as he ended up with no catches, including a couple of drops. Evans played 82% and had another record-breaking moment. His seven catches for 162 yards and a touchdown got him over 1,000 receiving yards on the season for the 10th year in a row, all to begin his career. Evans’ 75-yard score was the longest touchdown of his career as well, making more history. It’s very surprising that Godiwn could play that much and yet not provide anything in the passing game. Running back Chase Edmonds had his snaps move up to 15%, but Rachaad White still takes a ton of snaps and finished playing 87% of the plays. The tight ends had similar snap numbers and were not involved in the passing game at all. Offensive tackle Justin Skule saw one snap replacing an injured Tristan Wirfs for a play. Wirfs is banged up badly right now but still finds away to finish the game out. Bucs Defense Image ImageBucs LB J.J. Russell Photo by: USA Today A huge shout-out needs to be given to safety Ryan Neal, who had to move to inside linebacker after K.J. Britt was injured after seven plays. Neal has received a fair our of criticism for his play this season and it’s been justified, but he made a huge tackle early in the game to hold the Panthers to a field goal and kept the Bucs afloat down three linebackers. Neal ended up playing 79% of the snaps in a new role where he had one practice to learn it. Another shout-out should go to inside linebacker J.J. Russell, who played 99% of the snaps. It becomes a really dicey situation when a team is down to its fifth-string linebacker, though Russell got the job done with seven tackles, one sack and a tackle for loss. Carlton Davis III was the only defender to play 100% of the snaps and he had one of his better games of the season. Tampa Bay had three players at 99%, which were Russell, cornerback Zyon McCollum and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. Winfield recorded an interception in the fourth quarter, his second straight pick in a row over the last two games at Raymond James Stadium. ImageBucs OLB YaYa Diaby – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR The Bucs were forced to play mostly a dime package because of Britt’s injury. That gave plenty of more snaps to slot corner Christian Izien, who played 86%. That’s the second highest amount he’s played on the season and the most since the Thursday night game facing the Bills. Kaevon Merriweather also saw a significant amount of time at 49% with Dee Delaney at 53%. Tampa Bay kept its starting defensive front relatively similar with Shaq Barrett and YaYa Diaby getting the most snaps on the edge and Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea taking the most on the interior. Barrett just out-snapped the rookie Diaby, but it was the fellow rookie Kancey that had more time than Vea. The Bucs are going with their young players and it helped them get a win. Diaby had the third-most tackles with six along with a sack, while Kancey recorded two tackles and led the the defense with two quarterback hits.
