Bucs Provide Inside Look At Late-1990s Helmet Redesign

The Bucs rebrand in 1997 was quite a change for everyone, as the organization pushed aside its original orange and white uniforms — as well as its white Bucco Bruce helmets — and went in a completely different direction. Tampa Bay debuted a brand-new look with red and pewter as its primarily colors and orange and white as accent colors. That gave rise to “Pewter Power” and, of course, was what the Bucs wore when they won their first-ever Super Bowl. Because the Bucs wore those classic red and pewter uniforms during the latter stages of the Tony Dungy era and the Jon Gruden era, those are the uniforms often associated with the golden era of football in Tampa Bay. You’ll likely recall that this was the “alarm clock number” era, and it lasted from just 2014-2019. It was supposed to be a modernized look from Nike that was more gimmicky than good, and no matter how hard anyone tried to like them, it was ultimately futile. The team then went back to the drawing board ahead of the 2020 season and ultimately unveiled a modern take on the 1997-2013 look that so many fans loved. And that was done just in time, as Tom Brady came in that season and led the Bucs to their second Lombardi Trophy. These are the uniforms that Tampa Bay still wears now. Bucs Give A Look Into The Late-1990s Helmet Redesign Process So much goes into a rebrand, especially when you’re an NFL team. But a recent video collaboration between the Bucs and Tom Helmer — who runs Hooked On Helmets — showed just how involved of a process it was as Tampa Bay was looking to find its new helmet back during that initial rebrand. @bucsnfl Which helmet has the best design? 🤔 #NFL #Buccaneers #helmet #hookedonhelmets ♬ original sound – Tampa Bay Buccaneers As Helmer discusses, the Bucs started with three helmets — white, gray and pewter — all of which had the skull and cross swords logo (with no flag). The team also looked at having a black helmet, though the skull and swords logo had a pirate hat with the letter “B” on it. From there, Tampa Bay began to incorporate a flag into the logo, with a waving red flag behind the skull and cross swords logo on white, silver and black helmets. Notably, the pewter helmet wasn’t there at this stage of the design. Then, there was a collection of white helmets. One of them had a more developed skull and cross swords logo with a longer flag behind it, and there was a stripe down the middle that included the original Tampa Bay colors. There was also a red facemask under consideration. Other designs at this stage had a blueish/purple color in the flag and on the stripe, as well as one with a black and red flame-like stripe down the middle. Finally, the Bucs settled on a pewter helmet despite that color not being present since the initial few design options. It was about finding the right logo after that, and after trying an orange shield with silver swords and a red and white “TB” in the center, they finally found their look. The pewter helmet, the classic flag logo that you know and love and no stripe down the middle. When the Bucs redesigned their uniforms ahead of the 2020 season, they stuck with a modified version of this helmet — though it has the updated version of the Buccaneer flag logo that debuted in 2014 (a smaller version that originally unveiled back then) and possesses more of a shimmery pewter than the old matte-like look. Will The Bucs Add Another Alternate Helmet In 2025? The timing of the Bucs releasing this video is likely more coincidental than anything, as they were able to invite a content creator out during the offseason to put together this video for social media. Thank you ⁦@Buccaneers⁩ for having me out today to collaborate on some helmet content. Had a blast! pic.twitter.com/yh98sCFp7M — Tom Helmer (@TheTomHelmer) May 17, 2024 But the NFL did send a memo to teams earlier this offseason that they could wear a third alternate helmet in 2025. So, could this video be any kind of hint or trial balloon as Tampa Bay looks ahead toward potentially designing a new helmet to debut next season? Even if it’s not that, the fact remains that this kind of process could be in the works behind the scenes either now or in the future. ImageBucs alternate white helmet designed by Samer Ali Pewter Report’s Scott Reynolds wrote earlier this offseason about the possibility of the Bucs wearing a third helmet in 2025. Might it be a red one? A black one? The unveiling of a new white-helmet look might not even mean a “new” helmet, as Tampa Bay already has white helmets for its throwback Bucco Bruce look, and the equipment team would presumably be able to use different decals on that helmet to create a third alternate look. Whether the Bucs opt to have a third alternate helmet remains to be seen. The team hasn’t commented on the possibility, and it just had its first throwback creamsicle game in more than a decade last season after the league waived its one-helmet rule. As it stands, Tampa Bay has that throwback look and its standard pewter helmet — which it obviously wears with every version of their normal uniform sets, including the all-pewter look. What do you think, Pewter People? Did any of the helmet looks during the 1990s redesign process pique your interest, or what would you like to see if the Bucs were to unveil a new helmet for 2025?
