Bucs Roll To 32-9 Wild Card Win Over Eagles

After ending the season with five wins in their last six games to capture the NFC South crown for a third straight year, the Bucs were back in front of an electric playoff crowd at Raymond James Stadium Monday night. They treated their home crowd to a memorable night, as they raced out to a 16-3 lead early before making the necessary plays down the stretch to come away with a resounding 32-9 win over the defending NFC champion Eagles. After a first-round playoff exit last year, Tampa Bay will play in the NFC Divisional Round for the third time in four years. With the win over Philadelphia, Todd Bowles’ team will travel to Detroit for a matchup with the Lions next Sunday afternoon. The Bucs started with the ball and started fast, quickly moving into Eagles territory with Baker Mayfield throws to Cade Otton and Mike Evans. Rachaad White then picked up two first downs to keep the drive going, but inside the red zone, Tampa Bay stalled. Chase McLaughlin came on to drill a 28-yard field goal to give the home team an early 3-0 advantage. After a 22-yard catch to start the drive, Moore found himself wide open on 3rd & 7 from the Philadelphia 44. After making the catch for another first down, he made some moves and took advantage of some poor tackling in the Eagles secondary to turn it into more, breaking free for a 44-yard touchdown. With the PAT, it was a 10-0 first-quarter lead for Tampa Bay. After forcing an Eagles three-and-out, the Bucs went back to work on offense with a chance to really create a huge gap. The opening quarter came to a close with Tampa Bay driving. After one quarter, the Bucs had a 178-26 advantage in total yards and had a 10:40-4:20 advantage in time of possession. The second quarter opened with Mayfield getting sacked by Josh Sweat, but despite the setback, the drive still ended in points as McLaughlin connected on a 54-yard field goal to make it 13-0. The Eagles finally got something going offensively on their next possession, with the big play being a 31-yard pass from Hurts to Devonta Smith. But they eventually had to settle for a 47-yard field goal by Jake Elliott, which cut the game to 13-3. ImageBucs K Chase McLaughlin – Photo by: USA Today Mayfield and his offense responded, though. First, it was the quarterback scrambling for a first down on 3rd & 6. Then, it was a 10-yard run by Deven Thompkins. And after a 4th & 1 conversion by White from the 42-yard line, the Bucs did have to settle for another field goal try, but McLaughlin made it from 48 yards out. That answered the Eagles’ three with another three, making it a 16-3 advantage with 5:35 left in the first half. The Eagles weren’t going to go quietly, though. A 55-yard bomb from Hurts to Smith set up an easy 5-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to Dallas Goedert. That made it 16-9, and the score stayed that way even after Philly tried the “Brotherly Shove” for a two-point conversion. Tampa Bay stuffed the attempt, keeping it a seven-point game. That’s where the first half ended, with the home team in front 16-9. Out of the break, it became a bit of a sack party on both sides, with rookie Calijah Kancey getting to Hurts for one while Fletcher Cox and Nolan Smith split a sack of Mayfield on one drive before Milton Williams got Mayfield for another on Tampa Bay’s second possession of the half. The two teams traded punts and the Bucs kept winning the field position battle until it finally paid off with 2:16 to go in the third quarter. Anthony Nelson got to Hurts in the end zone and Hurts got the ball away, but intentional grounding was enforced and it was a huge safety for Tampa Bay, as that made it an 18-9 game. ImageBucs QB Baker Mayfield – Photo by: USA Today The Bucs made that big play by the defense really count by turning it into the start of a game-changing sequence. After getting the ball back from the safety, the offense struck quickly. Mayfield found Palmer for what initially looked like a short gain, but Palmer slipped a tackle and sped away for a 56-yard touchdown. McLaughlin’s PAT made it a 25-9 lead for Tampa Bay with 1:19 left in the third quarter. The Eagles drove down the field in response to the Palmer touchdown and looked to be threatening as the game flipped to the fourth quarter. But the Bucs defense held strong in the end, holding Philadelphia to a 40-yard field goal try. Only Zyon McCollum was in the neutral zone on the kick for the second time on the night and Nick Sirianni elected to take the points off the board to go for it on 4th & 5. That decision didn’t pay off, with some Carlton Davis lockdown coverage keeping it a 25-9 game with just under 12 minutes to go in the game. Tampa Bay went to work on the clock from there, draining 6:15 off the clock with a 12-play, 83-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Godwin. That made it 32-9, and the celebration was fully on inside Raymond James Stadium. ImageBucs TE Cade Otton – Photo by: USA Today Baker Mayfield’s stat line should look more impressive than it was, as his receivers let him down with some big-time drops throughout the first half. Even still, Mayfield finished 22-of-36 for 337 yards and three touchdowns. The Bucs offense got some huge performances from its supporting cast, as Mike Evans and Chris Godwin didn’t have much of an impact for much of the game. Cade Otton led the way, catching eight passes for a career-high 89 yards while it was David Moore and Trey Palmer coming through with electrifying touchdown catch-and-runs of 44 and 56 yards, respectively. Rachaad White chipped in with 72 yards on 18 carries. The Bucs ran for 119 yards on 29 carries as a team, good for a 4.1-yard average. As many big plays as the offense made, it was the Tampa Bay defense that really stepped up to the plate in this game. After getting gashed for big run after big run in their Week 3 meeting with the Eagles, the Bucs limited the Philadelphia run game to 41 yards on 15 carries (2.7 avg.). The blitz was working for Todd Bowles, too, as Jalen Hurts was under constant duress and finished 25-of-35 for 250 yards and a touchdown. Lavonte David had two tackles for loss, while Greg Gaines, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea all got to Hurts for sacks. Jamel Dean was the team’s leading tackler, totaling 10 (nine solo), with one tackle for loss and a pass defensed. The Bucs held the Eagles to an 0-for-9 mark on third downs and outgained them 426-275. The Bucs survived and advanced, setting up an NFC Divisional Round matchup on the road against the Lions next Sunday. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. The post Bucs Roll To 32-9 Wild Card Win Over Eagles appeared first on Pewter Report.
