Bucs Assistant Called First NFL Touchdown In Week 14

One of the more fun ancillary features of the NFL season is when players are mic’d up. The NFL enjoys giving fans glimpses of the interactions between players and teammates/coaches through these mic’d up sessions in game. During the Bucs 29-25 victory over the Falcons in Week 15, running back Rachaad White was mic’d up. His interactions were featured heavily in the Bucs’ latest episode of “In the Current.” That episode focused heavily on the late-season emergence of the Bucs running game and specifically White’s development as one of the better all-around backs in the NFL. His 1,539 yards from scrimmage was tied for 7th most in the league and was fourth among running backs. He totaled 25 carries for 102 yards while adding two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. That touchdown was a 31-yard screen in the third quarter that helped put the Bucs up 19-10. The “In the Current” episode shows the touchdown as well as White’s interactions following his score. On the sideline’s he walks up to offensive coordinator Dave Canales and high-fives him. As he does so, Canales says “Thank T-Lew. That was his call right there. I was going for Alstott.” White then immediately approaches Lewis and hugs him as Lewis tells him, “That was my first NFL touchdown. I just called that. Good sh*t.” To which White responds, “I love you, man.” Lewis Is A Rising Star On Bucs’ Coaching Staff ImageBucs assistant WRs coach Thad Lewis – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR At just 36 years old, Lewis has been with the Bucs for three seasons. Originally joining the organization in 2021 as assistant wide receivers coach, Lewis moved to quarterbacks coach this year after the arrival of Canales. Notably, Lewis was one of just a handful of offensive coaches retained from the 2022 season. Head coach Todd Bowles let go of most of the offensive staff after last season when the Bucs failed to average 20 points per game in Tom Brady’s final season. Lewis was kept because the organization saw him as one of the few bright spots from that side of the ball on the coaching side and thought he would be able to thrive as part of a new staff that would bring a more modern offense to the building. Moving Lewis to quarterbacks coach was a natural fit, as he was a former quarterback himself, playing four seasons at Duke from 2006 to 2009. Following his collegiate career, Lewis bounced around the NFL as an undrafted free agent, spending time with nine different organizations. During his first year as a QBs coach, Lewis has been able to help journeyman quarterback Baker Mayfield set career highs in passing yards (4,045) and completion percentage (64.3%), while throwing for 28 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. A journeyman himself whose days as a starter had largely been written off by the league, Smith had his best year as a pro in 2022 with Canales as his quarterbacks coach. With Canales reportedly getting interviews for head coaching jobs and Lewis’ resume now including a year helping to revitalize Mayfield’s career, it is likely his name will start to pop up for offensive coordinator openings throughout the league. He has experience in two different systems with different principles that will help him draw from a wide background of philosophies and concepts. Add to that, he recently was a participant in the NFL’s accelerator program and the fact that the league as a whole is trending to young minds stemming from the Kyle Shanahan-Sean McVay coaching tree (which Canales branches from), and you have all of the earmarks for a hot young name to keep an eye out for. Canales Gives Opportunities To His Coaches Canales had to wait 13 years after getting his first NFL coaching gig before finally getting his opportunity to call plays as a coordinator. He has divulged that over those 13 years he had, on occasion, the opportunity to call a play or two as a position coach. This snippet into Bucs’ world shows he is paying that favor forward with his own position coaches like Lewis in hopes that they might not have to wait as long as he did to get a similar opportunity.
