Bucs vs. Jaguars: Most Disappointing In Week 16

The Bucs returned home in time for Christmas and faced the Jaguars at Raymond James Stadium in a crucial Week 16 matchup on Sunday evening. They gave the fans an early present, as Tampa Bay continued to ride its momentum in a convincing 30-12 win over the Jaguars. All things considered, this is the highest the arrow has trended this season as the Bucs are now over .500 at 8-7 and have four straight wins. Still, despite this convincing effort, there is always a Most Disappointing column to complement the Most Impressive. It may seem like nitpicking based on how the game went, but here is what could have gone better in Tampa Bay’s victory. Bucs’ Run Game ImageBucs RB Rachaad White – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR While the offense was in full control of the tempo throughout the evening, the run game failed to be efficient. In the first half, it picked up 40 rushing yards on 16 carries, good for just a 2.5 yards per carry average. It got worse as the game went on, and they finished with 36 carries for 69 yards, equating to a paltry 1.9 yards per rushing attempt. There were moments, such as Rachaad White’s 11-yard run and Baker Mayfield’s gutsy 7-yard scramble in the first half, but it was not enough to get this aspect of the offense into a rhythm. White did more of his damage as a receiver and averaged just 1.9 yards per carry, while Chase Edmonds offered little as the change-of-pace back. Throughout much of the season, the run game has failed to get going in the first half. It has gotten going in the second half in recent weeks, but this week was not one of them and was a reversion back to the early-season struggles. If the offense wants to take it up another level, developing more early consistency on the ground is crucial. LG Aaron Stinnie The run game’s struggles were not just a product of the running backs not hitting their holes – there simply were not many to run through. Although they gave up 30 points, the Jaguars still amassed seven tackles for loss, including four by their defensive linemen. Highlighting the Bucs’ poor rushing performance was the play of their offensive line and left guard Aaron Stinnie in particular. Stinnie lost quite a few reps against the Jaguars’ defensive line and more often than not was getting outworked. OLB Shaq Barrett ImageBucs OLBs YaYa Diaby and Anthony Nelson – Photo by: USA Today Shaq Barrett did not have a bad game, but he makes this list as disappointing when compared to the emerging rookie YaYa Diaby lining up on the other side. Diaby was a menace against the Jaguars quarterbacks, recording a sack-fumble and finishing with 1.5 sacks. Diaby is breaking out, but where is Shaq? Barrett looked average in this one and earlier in the game gave up a completion in coverage. The Bucs are faced with a difficult decision soon about keeping him in the fold, and this showing in comparison to the rookie does not do Shaq Barrett any favors. Also worth noting, Barrett was questionable to return late in the game with a groin injury, which will be worth monitoring this week. Some Second Half Sloppiness Yes, it was still a convincing win, but the Jaguars’ offense was able to have some success in the second half as the Bucs were outscored in the last 30 minutes. Some of that can be attributed to letting off the gas, but between some costly flags and lapses in coverage, the Jaguars were able to get into a groove after C.J. Beathard took over the reins from Trevor Lawrence. This, of course, comes with a caveat that it was in garbage time. But it made the score look closer and it was disappointing to see the Bucs defense give up points and let them find the end zone twice when this had all the makings of a shutout.
