Bucs vs. Panthers: Most Disappointing In Week 13

This afternoon’s matchup between the Bucs and Panthers lacked points and much action. While the Bucs won 21-18, it was far from a convincing effort against a 1-10 team. It was a rainy first half, and the Bucs’ offense was similarly bleak until things got going in the second half. Here’s what was most disappointing. QB Baker Mayfield Baker Mayfield was far from efficient throwing the ball against his former team, one glance at the final stat line says as much. Mayfield was 14-29 for 202 yards for one touchdown and one interception. Take out having Mike Evans to throw the ball to and Mayfield’s totals sink to just 7-15 for 40 yards. On third-and-3 in the first half, Mayfield launched the football off his back foot to Mike Evans, which was intercepted by Donta Jackson. It usually is a good idea to throw to Evans, but it was a poorly thrown ball. It is also worth noting that outside of getting the ball to his star wide receiver, Mayfield failed to get with his other targets in the passing game. His inability to develop anything with his wide receivers and get the ball in their hands is puzzling. Adding to the frustration is going through his progressions and finding creases in the defense. While it was far from a good game by Mayfield, it is not all on him either. First-Half Offense It was a punt fest in the first half on both sides, but against a 1-10 football team, the Bucs’ offense needed to put together more than just seven points. It was not all on Baker Mayfield as there was also the lack of a run game and the playcalling was questionable. In the first half, Mayfield was just 8-17 for 89 yards and an interception, while Rachaad White had just 12 carries for 34 yards. Things got going after halftime, but the team’s slow start was concerning. Bucs’ Pass Rush ImageBucs DT Calijah Kancey and OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Panthers QB Bryce Young – Photo by: USA Today Facing a Panthers’ offensive line with three guards on injured reserve and lacking quality depth, the Bucs’ pass rush failed to get a hit on Bryce Young until Calijah Kancey did with just under 2:30 left in the first half. Facing a rookie quarterback who did not look comfortable and behind a shaky offensive line that has given up 43 sacks this season, the pass rush was not able to generate sustainable pressure. It was not until Antoine Winfield Jr. blitzed in the third quarter that Tampa Bay entered the sack column and they had just three sacks on the day. While they got going a bit in the third quarter, they had every chance to do more. Lack Of Chris Godwin Maybe it was because Chris Godwin was added to the injury report this week with a neck injury, but Godwin did not get the ball in his hands until the fourth quarter. When he was called upon, he made a play, taking an end around for 19 yards and into the end zone. But besides that, he did not have a reception on three targets, and his use within Dave Canales’ offense is puzzling. He vanished from the game until his touchdown, and the $20 million wide receiver’s number needs to be dialed up more. Bucs’ Run Defense The Bucs’ front seven let Chuba Hubbard run it with quite a bit of success this evening. Hubbard had 25 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He was able to do much of his damage consistently getting four and five yards per carry, and Tampa Bay’s defense had little answer to stopping him. On the day, they gave up 133 yards to Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and Raheem Blackshear. They were able to stop Bryce Young, but the Panthers were able to stay in this one thanks to a solid running game.
