Warriors coach Steve Kerr does not expect Andrew Wiggins to be traded at the deadline

SAN FRANCISCO — Warriors coach Steve Kerr hears the rumors that Andrew Wiggins could be on the trade block. But he doesn’t expect Wiggins to go anywhere, he said after practice on Thursday before the team took off for a five-game road trip. “I think he’s playing well,” Kerr said. “I’m very hopeful, and I expect him to be here when the trade deadline passes. He’s been a big part of our team now for years, helped us win a title a year and a half ago, still has a lot of career ahead of him.” Wiggins is on the first year of a four-year, $109 million extension he signed last offseason after playing a key role in the Warriors’ 2022 championship. Wiggins missed a few months last year for an undisclosed reason and has largely been inconsistent this year, putting up a career-low in points (12.5 per game), while shooting 44.2% from the field and 31.3% from 3. At one point, Wiggins’ struggles were so pervasive he was bumped from the starting lineup for 11 games, and he has the worst plus/minus on the team at minus-154. Jonathan Kuminga has filled the void at that position, but given his price tag it was only logical the Warriors might search for ways to find more production at that position on the market. Getting off Wiggins’ contract could also increase flexibility to get under the luxury tax’s second apron. But Wiggins has improved significantly with Draymond Green’s return from his indefinite suspension on Jan. 15. Green’s return allows Kerr to play Wiggins alongside Kuminga to maximize their downhill attack and length on defense. Since then, Wiggins is plus-35 averaging 18 points with 4.8 rebounds per game shooting 61.1% from the field. Klay Thompson, who missed Tuesday’s win against the Philadelphia 76ers with an illness, is expected to return, Kerr said. Green popped up on the injury report with a left knee contusion, but is listed as probably to play in Memphis.
