Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Detroit Pistons

Image Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images The Wemby-less Spurs give it one last go in the 2023-24 NBA season. The 82-game NBA regular season can feel like a marathon, or rather a journey. For the San Antonio Spurs, it’s had plenty of downs, and a few glorious highs. That adventure will end on Sunday afternoon in a matchup against the team holding the NBA’s worst record, the Detroit Pistons. Both teams have extensive injury reports heading into the game. Victor Wembanyama will sit out the Spurs last game, tying a bow on his Rookie of the Year winning season. Detroit will likely be without Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren in their last contest. Younger players looking to establish themselves in the NBA will get a shot to play more minutes. It’s a fitting end of the season for two rebuilding squads. San Antonio Spurs (21-60) vs. Detroit Pistons (14-67) April 14, 2024 | 2:30 PM CT Watch: Bally | Listen: WOAI (1200 AM) Spurs Injuries: Charles Bassey – Out (left knee,) Dominick Barlow – Out (left knee,) Keldon Johnson – Out (left foot,) Cedi Osman – Out (right ankle,) Jeremy Sochan – Out (left ankle,) Devin Vassell – Out (right foot,) Malaki Branham – Out (concussion protocol,) Victor Wembanyama – Out (right ankle,) Zach Collins – Questionable (left thumb) Pistons Injuries: Cade Cunningham – Doubtful (left knee,) Jalen Duren – Questionable (low back,) Tosan Evbuomwan – Out (G League,) Simone Fontecchio – Out (left toe,) Quentin Grimes – Out (right knee,) Isaiah Stewart – Out (right hamstring,) Ausar Thompson – Out (illness,) Stanley Umude – Out (right ankle) What to watch for Who steps up as a primary scorer? San Antonio’s top-5 scorers are on the injury report for Sunday’s contest. Of the players who will suit up, Tre Jones has the highest scoring average with 10 points a game. Jones is more of a playmaker than a primary scoring option. Just who will step up for the Spurs as the go-to guy? Julian Champagnie and Sandro Mamukelashvili are likely candidates, as both have been scoring the ball well lately. Look out for Blake Wesley and Jamaree Bouyea as guards who have explosive scoring potential in a fast paced game. Two-way players getting a chance Over the last few games, Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich, has given a chance to some players who have spent the bulk of the season in the G League. Sidy Cissoko, Bouyea, RaiQuan Gray and David Duke Jr. have all played a larger share of minutes near the end of the season. Cissoko has looked good, playing tough defense and throwing down roaring dunks off smart cuts. Gray and Duke Jr. both have looked decent in their minutes. With a depleted roster, San Antonio will lean on these players to grab them their 22nd win to wrap up the season.
