Nets' Mikal Bridges on loss to Hawks: 'gotta step up for the next guy'

The Brooklyn Nets have been dealing with some unfortunate injuries to its rotation for the entirety of this season and have had the luxury of having one of the toughest schedules in the NBA to begin this campaign. However, it seems that there is always something not going according to plan. In Wednesday’s 147-145 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn did not start the game well as they allowed the Hawks to score 45 points in the first quarter. The Nets are one of the best teams in the league in terms of scoring in transition, but on Wednesday, Atlanta was the team that was getting out in transition and scoring points in bunches. Nets guard Mikal Bridges was one of the players trying to change the script for Brooklyn by scoring 45 points on 16-of-31 shooting from the field and collecting 11 rebounds. However, Bridges’ high-scoring effort did not stop the Nets from earning another loss in a season where they need to start winning some games against some of the teams on their level. Atlanta came into Wednesday’s with a 6-7 record just like the Nets and similar to the Hawks, Brooklyn has had issues on the defensive end. Bridges addressed the defense after it gave up 147 points to the Hawks while Atlanta was on the second night of a back-to-back: “We just got to figure it out. I know we’re helping, but we just got to just step up for the next guy, you know? When we run our defense and trying to stop the ball (from) getting in the paint, we just got to help each other out. But, yeah it’s tough. Just the defense we have, you can give up those shots over there (three-point shots) and it’s tough. We just got to figure it out.”
