De’Aaron Fox on potentially joining Team USA for 2024 Paris Olympics

ImageOn Tuesday afternoon, USA Basketball announced the pool of athletes being considered for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s National Team, which will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. As expected, it’s a star-studded cast, including Sacramento Kings star point guard De’Aaron Fox. No other Kings were mentioned (Domantas Sabonis is Lithuanian). Fox joins the likes of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Haliburton, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, Chris Paul and others in the current pool of consideration. USA Basketball Men’s National Team managing director Grant Hill will be the primary decision maker in forming the roster. De’Aaron Fox was asked about being considered and the potential of playing in the Olympics after their practice on Wednesday. “It’s an honor to be able to represent my country,” he said. “I talked to Grant (Hill) a little bit. I was already in the loop, and obviously, I want to continue to focus on what we’re doing right now, but it’s definitely an honor to be able to be mentioned with a lot of those players who have already won gold medals.”

Aside from the aforementioned players, Fox will be competing for a spot with a stellar group of NBA guards: Devin Booker, Jalen Brunson, Alex Caruso, Josh Hart, Tyler Herro, Jrue Holiday, Donovan Mitchell, Austin Reaves, Derrick White, and Trae Young. After making his first All-Star appearance in 2022-23, De’Aaron Fox has continued to develop his game. He’s averaging 27.4 points, 5.6 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.6 steals on 46.5 percent from the field, including a career-high 39.0 percent from three on 8.1 attempts per game. “It’s just a testament to who he is, also the direction that he’s heading,” Kings head coach Mike Brown said when asked about Fox’s consideration. “But, anytime you get the chance to represent your country at the highest level when you’re talking about the Olympics, that’s a special feeling.”

While it’s early in the process, De’Aaron Fox potentially playing for Team USA in the Olympics would be the first time an active Sacramento Kings player made the roster since Demarcus Cousins in 2016. Prior to that, Mitch Richmond in 1996 was the most recent Sacramento representation. When is the next Sacramento Kings game? Sacramento will come face-to-face with its Northern California rival, the Golden State Warriors, for the fourth and final time this season when the two teams face off on Thursday night at Chase Center. The Kings have been seeking their first regular season win on Golden State’s home floor since February 25, 2020, as they have lost their last seven matchups in San Francisco. Sacramento secured a nail-biting win over the Warriors during their most recent matchup on November 28th, thanks to Malik Monk’s game-winner.   Image   Thursday’s game will start a season-long, seven-game road trip for the Kings, who won’t return home until February 7th.
