(Photo by Casey Sykes/Getty Images) The 2023-24 NBA season represents a pivotal moment in the Atlanta Hawks‘ franchise as they’ve got to find a way to show ownership that their current roster is good enough to compete in the Eastern Conference. After making the Eastern Conference Finals a few years ago, the Hawks have struggled to replicate that success as they’ve been bounced out early in the playoffs. Even with star backcourt tandem of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, Atlanta is once again looking like a middling team as they own an 8-7 record and currently sit at eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. However, there have been bright spots on the roster, most notably small forward Jalen Johnson who has taken a leap. The former first-round pick has looked like a prototypical 3-and-D wing this year and has been giving the Hawks offense a massive boost. However, Johnson recently suffered a left wrist injury and will be forced to miss several weeks via Shams Charania of The Athletic. Losing Johnson will sap some of the wing depth on the team, so head coach Quin Snyder might have to lean even more on his guards to carry the brunt of the scoring burden. Hopefully, Johnson is able to come back sooner rather than later because the Hawks need to win this year or risk blowing up the roster next offseason.
