Should Blazers sign former top pick Jarrett Culver?

Image Photo by Scott Audette/NBAE via Getty Images Jarrett Culver was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, but he has turned into one of the biggest busts in recent history. The Portland Trail Blazers are rebuilding and they are going through a trial-and-error process to figure out which players will be part of the team long-term. That means the team should get creative and try to bring on some players from all corners of the basketball world. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley suggests the team should target free agent Jarrett Culver. The Damian Lillard-less Trail Blazers should be fully focused on their future. Every move they make must be made with an intent to brighten that outlook. Doing so while shopping in the NBA’s equivalent of the day-old bakery obviously won’t be easy, but what would Portland stand to lose by being the next team that attempts to unlock Jarrett Culver’s potential? Remember, this league once valued the 6’6” swingman enough to make him the No. 6 pick of the 2019 draft. Granted, that was four-plus years and three NBA teams ago, but he’s only 24, so there might still be some time for him to turn the corner. The odds that he’ll pan out aren’t great—he’s a bad shooter from every level—but Portland should have enough patience to see whether his defense and athleticism can form something more interesting than he’s been to this point. It’s been a little over a year since Culver saw an NBA court, but he’s been playing in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Culver, the former No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, is averaging 20.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the Vipers this season, proving that he is improving. Still just 24, Culver still has time to turn his career around. He just needs a shot, and maybe the Blazers are the team to grant that chance.
